I BLINKED PROFUSELY. It must have been my imagination. It had to be."You okay? It seems like you have seen a ghost," Mikayla asked in a worried tone, but laughing a bit to lighten the situation.
You wouldn't know.
"Lol, I'm fine, let's go collect our schedules," I lied, still staring at the hallway with furrowed brows. No way he could just walk so fast. But he's a Spirit.
''If you say so,'' Mikayla said suspiciously before leading the way to the office.
After collecting our respective schedules from the grumpy office clerk, we strolled down the hallway to figure out our classes. Mikayla and I only shared history on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Like, fate had to intervene. My first period for that day was physics while hers was mathematics.
Just great.
"I will show you the class, come on."
"You're gonna be late, I can find it don't worry," I interjected since it was almost time but she didn't bulge, muttering something about promise.
We walked down the hallways with a couple of people giving me looks, not odd ones but ones that said 'is she new'. Well I hoped they did. My nervous posture did try to hit in, but having Mikayla by my side calmed my nerves a bit.
We walked over for a few minutes navigating the long passages before reaching a mahogany door.
"I have escorted us to our destination, your Highness," Mikayla spoke, gesturing with her hands making me smile for her comedic antics.
"Thank you so much," I beamed at her knowing I wouldn't have ever found it on my own.
"See you at lunch!" She threw a wave as she hopped down the stairs. The warning bell just then stroke signaling everyone to rush to their classes.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed the door and entered the air conditioned room. The class was moderately big with benches conjoined into two. I chose a seat at the corner of the third row and plopped down. It would be all fine, I promised the words to myself.
Looking around, I took in the few students huddled in pairs or groups, engaging in small talks about their vacations and what not.
"You're new," it wasn't a question.
I looked aside to find a boy with a big chain around his neck. His chocolate colored skin was flawless with taut muscles.
"Yep."
"Jaxon," he said plopping down next to me.
"Abigail," I said smiling a bit. Jaxon returned the gesture showing off his pearly teeth before adding, ''So, what's up?''
We engaged in a small talk till the class filled up with teenage pranksters and after about fifteen minutes, the teacher finally made an appearance. He was a short, bald man who seemed to be around forty and a belly protruding enough to make him look pregnant. My thoughts were answered as I heard Jaxon snorting beside me, ''Dang, the roles have switched.''
Before long, the class was over with some introductory instructions and talking about the topics we had to cover over the time. Mr. Paxton aka the pregnant physics teacher seemed laid back, sort of a chilled man who would prefer going with the flow. The class was a chattering mess, and he didn't mind at all. It gave Jaxon and me all the time in the world to chit-chat our way through with some other kids too.
Jaxon turned out to be the hilarious new kid who moved all the way from Australia after his dad had finished his PhD on climatic changes. He was exactly pleased but also didn't mind moving here since he did visit from time to time. I had a lot to learn from him. We had a number of classes in common so it was a silent note to friendship; something none of us would mind.
The other classes were pretty much the same with the teachers practically giving introductory lessons or starting a topic, and some even giving us to relax for the day before they would bombard us with work. The only difference was I didn't find a Jaxon in every class, which was fine by me. Time passed by quickly until the bell rang noting it was lunch break.
I walked down the hallway crowded with students from all classes, making me look like a lost puppy. I followed the crowd to the cafeteria where I struggled to find Mikayla and Jaxon. Not on the first day I would be all alone, I thought. But I had some luck.
"Hey," Mikayla and Jaxon called me in unison from behind.
Both of them stared at each other in confusion while I tried to hold in my laughter. I didn't think of them meeting in this way.
"Hey Jaxon, this is Mikayla who I was talking about," I decided to make the introduction for them.
"Hi." This time I couldn't hold in my laughter as they both spoke in unison again. Mikayla's cheeks flushed red as she looked down while Jaxon just scratched the back of his neck muttering something under his breath. I just stood there shaking with laughter.
"Shall we?" Jaxon asked breaking the awkward silence.
"Yeah, sure," I said in behalf of all of us.
The cafeteria was bustling with energy of the students from all category. It seemed be out of a movie scene with the jocks and the nerds sitting separately, with some joking and gossiping about their secrets while others sharing their ambitions of going to well known universities. They were that loud. The cafeteria seemed clean, although I couldn't help but wonder how many food fights it had seen.
As if I were still wondering, I saw the 'Spirit' through the huge paneled screen in front. I averted my gaze harshly to see where Mikayla was heading. I was definitely going crazy. She stopped in front of a table full of 'popular kids.'
"You sit there?" Jaxon said. He seemed quite jittery and uncomfortable.
"Well, I don't but my boyfriend insists I should sit there with his friends."
"What about your friends?" Jaxon pushed.
"Well, here, you guys!" Mikayla said smiling, but I knew there was more to that. But I obviously didn't interject and poked Jaxon to do the same. He just nodded slightly before we made our way there.
"Hey babe," a guy with a smirk got up to hug Mikayla. He definitely met up to the requirements of being handsome with broad shoulders, dirty blond hair and oozed off with confidence that screamed 'I'm a bad boy'.
Well, I was happy for Mikayla, I just didn't expect her to fall for bad boy type. Looks can betray...or I was reading too much into people.
"Babe, this is Abby and Jaxon, and guys this is my awesome boyfriend, Elijah."
Elijah looked up smiling politely at us but I found him glaring at Jaxon. Jaxon just returned a bored look.
Well someone's jealous.
The thought was funny since he didn't have to be. He was lucky to have a girl like Mikayla. Even not knowing Mikayla that long, I was sure she was very loving to her keens.
There were many others around him, especially girls. Mikayla seemed a bit uncomfortable but our company cheered her up. While Elijah might be handsome, he was no match for Spirit. I scoffed at myself to compare him with an illusion.
I mean, if people could have boyfriends created by their imagination, I would see Zac Efrons a lot. Weirded by my own thoughts, I looked around for Spirit and found him sitting outside under a shade, through the window sills. Oh well, was I dreaming or what?
I had to be sure about something. Before it made me crazy.
