My heart sank. The last thing I wanted was a hangman's ghost living over my head!
But Liam's snapped his fingers. "Hey, that's a great idea! And my black is higher than everybody else's. Let's go there!"
His place was also nearest to the canal, which meant we didn't have far to go with our two strange companions. Just as well, too!
No sooner had we crossed the bridge and started walking up the street toward Liam's block than Zayn Malik's cat began hissing. Its hackles rose, and the hangman struggled to stop it from jumping from his arms.
"Quiet Disraeli," he whispered. Then to us he said, "That's his way of warning us."
My chest tightened. If anyone saw us going for a walk with the ghost, they'd stop us for sure and ask questions. And if the police saw us, I didn't want to think what they'd do!
My eyes darted warily from side to side. Lights blazed in the apartment blocks, but the street was deserted. "I can't see anyone."
A moment later, two figures approached in the distance. As they drew nearer, one of them waved.
"Hey guys! What are you doing down here?"
It was two of our friends from school - Luke and Calum. And they were staring at us curiously.
"We've just been shopping," said Niall uneasily.
Luke looked around, baffled. "But there aren't any shops here, just the canal."
"We've been down here to the mall," Calumet said happily, holding a plastic bag. "We bought two DVDs." Suddenly his expression changed. His eyes widened, and his face went taunt with tension. "Wh-wh-who's that?" He asked, pointing at the hangman's ghost.
Luke was staring at the hangman too. "He looks kind of.. weird."
I said the first thing that came to my mind. "That's my Uncle Zayn."
"I didn't know you had an uncle," Luke said.
"He lives a long way away," Niall mumbled.
"In London," Liam added.
Calum stepped closer and peered up into the hangman's face. "Why does he look like that?"
"Don't be rude," chided Harry.
"And look at his cat," Luke gulped.
"It looks mangled," Calum said.
"It looks dead!" Luke blurted. "Really dead. Like you can see right inside it."
Disraeli made a savage, snarling sound. Its teeth glinted. Luke jumped away.
"I think we'd better go," he said in a choked voice. And they hurried past us down the street. I let out a sigh of relief. A moment later, I sucked in a breath as a police car swung out of a drive way and slid toward us.
Liam turned down a path. "Quick! This is my block. Let's get inside."
We sped down the path, the police car's lights flashing in the street behind us.
A/N: I think it's a bad news for me but not for you tho. >
