Chapter 6: Befanny Formini
Jack Frost
I was alone in a dark space, like how my previous dreams ended up in. But this time, it's different from before. I couldn't hear the sweet lullaby of the glowing man that always shows up in my dreams. And there's no twinkling stars above me. It's just darkness.
"Is anyone there?" I tried to ask in the dark, fear of the isolation I'm struggling. No one was answering. I'm completely alone, with cold feet and hands.
But then, I saw a glimpse of a figure in a far distance. I didn't hesitate to stare at it for a long time, waiting for it to do something. And yet, it didn't move in its position. Just standing. It's like it's waiting for me to make the move.
So I didn't have a choice. I took my very first step in the dark, didn't know what I have even been standing all this time. That figure was calling me, even though I couldn't hear its voice.
After seconds of walking, I can finally see the figure that was standing, looking at me.
It was a woman. A woman with curly hazel hair tied into a loose ponytail. Her yellow fur coat fits her well. And then, her smile. Her smile that gave me warmth every time I see it. It's like she knew what I've been thinking all this time. It's like she can sense me, understand me, even though I'm not telling her anything.
"Wake up."
Her sweet voice echoed in my ears, as I was being pulled by an unexpected force into the air. I screamed as I flew away from the lady I met, tried to reach out to her. But seconds past, she is slowly fading from my vision.
"Ahhh!!"
I woke up in a bed, with my pale hands stretched out to the air, tried to reach something that wasn't there. I tried to take some air as I can, since I couldn't barely breathe. After gathering enough oxygen for my lungs, I took a long breath and sighed.
"A-Are you fine, sir?" A female voice spoke in an Italian accent. I turned my head around the room to see the lady who trapped me with her ropes.
Her face was partly covered by her long bangs and her shawl, and her long hair was tied into two loose ponytails, but I can still see it and it's full of guilt and anxiety.
I couldn't help but to stare at her face. The resemblance was so familiar to me like how deep the center of the Earth from me, but I don't know where I've seen it.
"Umm... sir?" She tried to ask me something, which brought me back to my senses. Embarrassed of what I've been doing, I quickly averted my eyes from her face, and just lowered my head to see my old pants. Why am I keep staring at her?
"W-What just happened?" I tried to ask, still stuttering because of the embarrassment that I wouldn't get out of my head. Before, I did everything without any worries. Throwing snowballs at people, freezing water pipes, and annoying Bunny during Easter Sunday. Maybe because I'm not invisible anymore, and people can now see what I'm doing. I hope she would forgive because of what I'm doing.
"Y-You were unconscious as I pulled you up in the air." She said, did the same thing as me: lowered her head, and avoided my eyes. I didn't know that she was embarassed, too. Did she do something wrong? "I'm very sorry for what I did! I thought you're a witch hunter or something."
I found humor in her words, which tickled my whole body, and I couldn't help but to release my laughter. I chuckled at her apology, which made her one eyebrow raised higher than the other. I never thought I found that funny. I mean, is there even a witch hunter in this period?
"That's fine." I said with a sincere smile, as I tried to wipe the tears from my eyes because of my laughter. "The name's Jack Frost. And you are?"
We stared at each other for one second. I raised one of my eyebrows, waiting for her respond, but all I can see in her face was a poker, didn't know if she is happy because of what I said or not. She was just there, staring at me, like what I did earlier.
"Oh! U-Umm... My name's Befanny Formini!" She introduced herself, trying to avoid my eyes and looked around the room. I saw her cheeks turning into a tomato. "I'm the Witch of Christmas! At your service!"
My eyes widened as I was surprised of her sudden change of attitude. At first, I thought she was just a shy person, but then, when she introduced herself, she acted like a host from a television show.
All I can say that her personality is weird, which made me more interested in her.
"Nice to meet you too." I said as I interpreted her introduction as a way to greet me. I chuckled softly as I watched her tried to impress me with her actions.
Suddenly, the witch's broom beside her moved without anyone holding it, and tapped Befanny's left arm. I was shocked and amazed at the same time because of what I saw. I didn't know it was alive.
My companion looked at it with a questioning expression written in her face. But then, it changed into a surprise, like she remembered something that she completely forgot to do earlier.
"Oddio! I forgot to say something!" She yelled at me with full of worry and guilt written on her face. I tilted my head and raised another eyebrow because of the confusion he gave me. "It's time for breakfast! The gang's calling you!"
She said to me with a warm and cheerful smile stuck in her face. She grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the bed I was sitting as she dragged me out of the room we were in.
As I saw her smile, I couldn't help but to smile as well.
