As the title already reveals, this is an omegaverse fanfic. After reading the first omegaverse story about Jikook, I've become obsessed with them. In general reading fanfics about them in alternate universes became like a new hobby of mine - shout out to Corona.
Anyways.
I'm sure a lot of you already know about omegaverse stories and the alpha/beta/omega dynamic, but for those of you who think what the hell did I get myself into, here's a crash-course about the concept in general and also some additional facts, that might differ from the typical omegaverse stories, but are important to know for this particular fanfiction.
- omegaverse is basically an alternate universe about humans with wolf-like instincts. They are born either as an alpha, a beta or an omega. These terms follow the hierarchal structure of wolfs in a pack, where alphas are (biologically speaking) the highest rank, betas the second rank and omegas the lowest rank
- alphas, betas and omegas have a scent gland (not visible) that is located in the wrist area and between the shoulder and neck. Their scent is the strongest in these areas
- omegas and alphas radiate a unique scent and are, by their biology and sexual force, attracted to each other, whereas betas don't own a scent out of the ordinary. The alpha's scent is known to be musky, while the omega's scent is of a rather sweet note. The beta's scent is typically neutral but can have a calming effect to alphas and omegas nonetheless
- a common thing they do in relationships (between close friends, family members or the significant other) is scenting. The one who scents basically cloaks the other with his own scent by rubbing their cheek and nose against their scent gland. This process is perceived as very calming and strengthens the bond between two people
- alphas occasionally go into ruts and omegas into heats, during which they get extremely horny, wanna breed (make babies) and get mated (form a marriage-like bond for life with someone through a bite in the neck)
- the first heat/rut can be compared to the first menstruation. It is a special day, because on that day, one has officially "presented" as his rank. After that, heats and ruts return every 3 months and can last up to 2-4 days. If they don't have a partner to help them through, heats and ruts are painful and physically draining
- once mated, the couple's scents merge and the bite mark on their neck is a sign that they are taken and belong to someone
- sexual orientation isn't a big deal, hence "gay/lesbian" doesn't exist and every gender combination is considered normal, though every individual can have personal gender preferences
I'm just gonna leave it at that for now, the rest will be explained as the story proceeds.
