A few weeks later
Out of all the opportunities I'd got to fail my job, this was the worst one. One of the princes was throwing a little gathering, Bakugo was invited so his little minions aka me and Kirishima had to follow. If I didn't find all the ways to protect my king, the whole kingdom would have my head! I'd managed to get my spies to like me enough but most of the kingdom were still filled with hatred for my kind, I'm not even sure why but I swear if I got one more cat-related comment...someone was going to die a very violent death.I stood outside the gates of the party waiting patiently for the King and his company, I'd already scouted the outside to a great extend and there was no one hiding or staging of an assassination ready for his arrival so it was temporarily safe, but that didn't mean my work was done, not by a long shot. I flinched as two large beasts appeared on the horizon, everything inside told me to run but I couldn't move. Something deep down told me I wasn't in any danger. That in a few seconds, I wouldn't be eaten or roasted alive by the terrors that flew towards me at quite an alarming rate.
I only released the held breath when they landed a little away and the king alongside Kirishima strode out confidently "don't cat folk normally like warm buzzy places like this?" I folded my arms "remember what I said about 'weirdo' in court?" I extended my hand to let them go inside but what I didn't expect was for Kirishima to offer me his arm "are you sure you want to be seen publicly with me? A cat folk?" He smiled sweetly "Gladly!" I looped my arm through his nervously "ok, but say so if we start getting weird looks. My kind aren't normally equal at these things. We're usually serving drinks or if we're lucky, not here at all because humans are frightening at times"
He gave me a weird look as we spoke "so you find humans scary but not big beastly dragons?" I nodded motioning to the red - haired dragon before me "no offence, but you don't really give off the 'i will eat you' vibe, it's more a 'big buzzy friendly' thing...no offence meant by that, you were totally terrifying in court, definitely had me trembling where I stood" he caught on to my sarcasm quickly "hey it's cool! I don't like hurting people unless they're a real threat...and you're a-""you say 'cat' or 'kitty', and there will be dragon blood spilled on this white varnish marble floor" he raised his hands in surrender "I was gonna say 'soft cuddle buddy' but 'feline' works too"
Bakugo's eyes caught mine as he requested Kirishima and I guard a door he slipped through with two other men before signalling for me to eavesdrop on the conversation. It was pretty boring standing across the corridor from each other since whoever was inside was yelling so even he could hear the quarrel I was meant to be listening in on "How could you be so foolish?!" There was the sound of something heavy breaking, my guess was either a table or a chair.
I pressed my ear to the door as things quieted down "you know what the gods will do if you anger them again Kacchan. Look, Shoto and I can only do so much to keep our kingdoms united but-""United? United?! We haven't been united for a while you damn deku, you sent me a damn box with one of your slaves inside! You know how I feel about that kind of thing" there was an awkward silence "I was never told what was inside that box...if possible, we'd like to apologise to the individual in person"
My claws dug into my hands as their naivety struck my heart right where it hurt "No way! She's...she's important to us, and we don't need your kind filling her head with more lies!"
Footsteps could be heard approaching the door so Kirishima and I panicked as he pinned me like we'd planned if things went 'pear-shaped' as he put it which didn't make sense because there was nothing wrong with the shape of pears.
"It's okay, it's part of the plan" his lips made contact with mine as my hands rested on his chest as the doors swung open "knock it off, dumbasses. We're leaving!" The dragon was suddenly pulled off me but my hand went with him as he dragged me after the king "Wait!" We all stopped in our tracks parting so the king could go back to argue some more which he did but not as far as I thought he'd go
"We'll trade for the black cat. They're rare nowadays and extremely valuable" I glanced over my shoulder slightly as Kirishima tugged at my hand a little
"you two idiots already did. She was the one in the box" I eventually gave into to my hand holder and we ended up dancing amongst the crowd "sorry, I know how personal things get when we talk about 'the box'. I didn't want them getting to ya" he twirled me with a nervous smile "thank you, for everything" my back landed against his chest "don't sweat it. You're one of us now"
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the three still arguing but the green haired one's eyes were pinned to me "Kirishima, they don't seem to be giving up" he looked at me "what are you thinking?" We parted as I spotted a servant making his way towards the lords "just don't let Bakugo drink tonight" he distracted the servant as I spiked the drinks with sleeping powder before joining the argument peacefully trying to delay the scene that would be made if my plan didn't work.
"Whoa man, we're flying tonight remember? Drinking and flying do not mix!" Kirishima took the glass from the king's hand as the other two drank sophisticatedly "Shoto, this doesn't taste right. I think we've bee-"
I watched the two collapse with the glasses shattered in hand as they hit the floor but the music was too loud to draw attention "drugged? Yea, sleeping powder will do that to ya I'm afraid" I repositioned their bodies to make it look like they were cuddling which would lead people to believe they collapsed from too much wine.
"Now they know what you have on your side, it's unlikely they'll give up without a fight" he gave me a side look "just how rare are black cats?" I pushed myself down "it's better you don't know"
Without warning, the king drank the wine forgetting I'd drugged it "Wai-" I shared a glance with Kirishima as he caught our leader before he hit the floor "what exactly did you put in the drink?" I shrugged "small amount sleeping powder. Why?" He sighed in relief "then we have a few hours to get home before he kills both of us" I just realised what i did. I just intoxicated three people of high authority in public! How have I not been noticed?!
We quickly hauled him out of there before anyone noticed "I can carry you if you want?" I shook my head rubbing my arm "thanks but I'll walk. It's really not that far" he gave me the 'are you serious right now?' Look then without another word transformed into his larger form "get on" I titled my head "you're not gonna let me say 'no', are you?" Even in his more animalistic form, I could tell he was smiling as I hauled the king onto the back of the dragon "it wouldn't be manly"
The whole way back, I death gripped Kirishima's back while half clinging to the king probably leaving marks. I'd be lying if I said the view wasn't the most amazing thing I'd ever seen.
Little lit windows highlighted the miniature areas of civilisation below us as the nightly fog settled in. The cold air rushing past my ears was extraordinary, it felt so liberating to be up here among the stars...how had I never done this before?! Oh right, dragons don't usually give free rides and they terrorised our villages for centuries so only a lunatic would go near one...crap that makes me a lunatic.
Despite my protests, Kiri used my room to hide the king in in case we were trailed however this also meant I couldn't use the bed tonight so my options were the ceiling beams, the little chair in the corner or just simply on the floor...or I could share the bed? What?! No! That's not allowed! Even if I did see the look in his eye when Kirishima kissed me. It means nothing! He's still king and I'm still spymaster, nothing more.
