"Come on," Jessica complained, "let's go back!" Jessica hates being in the woods. she would much rather be with her boyfriend, Vik, but mom said she had to take care of me. That sort of means she has to come with me when I explore the woods.
"Yeah, so you can hang out with your boyfriend. Go ahead." I told her, "I'm still going farther." I don't like her tagging along with me any more than she does.
"But I can't go back without you," Jessica whined, "then mom will KILL me!"
"Okay then, don't go," I replied, "whatever your choice is, I'm still going to venture farther." I love exploring the woods around my home. I'm not going to cut the precious time I have in the woods so that my sister can hang out with her boyfriend.
"Out of all the little girls in the world," Jessica complained, "they had to pick you to be my little sister." My sister usually says stuff like this. She mostly says stuff like that when I annoy her.
Once, I overheard Jessica ask mom why I'm so annoying and her exact words were, "Cause that's what little sisters are for." So that is what I do. Not that I try to, of course.
I picked up a flower. It had red open petals and a thick green stem. There was a big patch of them at my feet. In the middle of the patch of red flowers, there was one yellow flower. It still had open petals and a thick green stem, but the petals were yellow instead of red. Strange, wouldn't the yellow flower be with other yellow flowers? Red with red and yellow with yellow?
"Jessica," A voice called.
I transformed into a wolf. "Who's that?" I said. My ears perked up. I bent down, ready to pounce on anyone who came through the woods looking for my sister.
"Stand down," Jessica growled at me, "I recognize that voice." When I didn't move from my position, she sighed and shook her head. "Little sisters," Jessica grumbled under her breath. Just then a squirrel scurried out from under the bushes, Jessica screamed, I jumped and landed right on top of it. Jessica rolled her eyes. I let the little squirrel go and turned back into a human.
"Jessica," someone called again.
"I'm over here, Veronica!" Jessica called back.
All of a sudden, a wolf jumped out of the woods into the opening. I turned back to a wolf and went right back into my position, growling. The wolf turned human and took a step back, holding her hands up. "Calm down, little pup," Veronica said.
"I'm not a pup," I muttered and backed down.
"Hey, Veronica. You can ignore my little sister," Jessica told her, "what do you need?"
"Oh, I came to find you," Veronica replied, "Vik is waiting for you."
"Aw, he is so sweet," Jessica said, "but I can't, I have to stay with Kayla." She looked back at me. "Please," She begged.
"No," I responded stubbornly.
Jessica sighed, "Come on, Kayla, you can't be the daughter of the alpha if you're always in the woods, away from your people," Jessica countered.
"Why would it matter, you're the oldest," I argued, "They're your people, not mine."
"Do you really have to?" Veronica asked. When Jessica gave her a questioning look she added, "staying with Kayla, I mean, your parents can't expect you to lead your people well if you're always out here watching your little sister."
"Yeah, Veronica's right, " Jessica thought out loud, then my sister turned back to me, "you can follow me back if you want, but I'm not staying out here any longer and don't come crying to me if you get eaten by a wild animal." Jessica flipped her long shiny black hair over her shoulder.
