I remember the day I found out. Sitting on the couch at home, watching TV, not a care in the world. I was completely safe. Until my mom ran into the room, and told me to switch to the news. And there it was. That headline at the bottom of the screen saying "Xurin declares war on Elyki!" Xurin and Elyki are our leaders. They are two organizations that run our government, side by side. There had been worries for the past two years that a war might break out, because they started arguing and fighting about which organization should have more power over our country, Tagend. And then, our worst fears came true, when one of their larger disagreements lead to one of the favourites of Xurin being killed by Elyki. Accidentally, of course, but when a friend is killed, it's hard to see sense. Your first instinct is to blame. Believe me, I know.
And the incident that was on the news was when Xurin put their revenge plan into action and attacked Elyki, declaring war on them. Unfortunately, we are not split into sides, or seperate countries so that we are given a side in the war. We are all one nation, but we had to choose: Elyki, or Xurin. My mind was made up pretty quickly when my parents were killed when Xurin bombed a store they were shopping in. After the funeral, all I could do was hope and pray that Elyki would kill those bastards in Xurin who were responsible for my parents' deaths. I wanted Elyki to win the war, full stop.
About a week after my parents' funeral, I went to live with my Grandfather. My Grandma past away when I was a baby, leaving my Grandpa alone. But he was ok. He's one of the strongest people I've ever known. He isn't one of those grandparents who lives in a big mansion, smokes a pipe and sleeps all the time. If that was his lifestyle, I would probably have gone out of my mind by now. He's up, and fun, and willing to do pretty much anything. But I was devestated by my parents' deaths, and so was Grandpa. He suggested that we go on a cruise for March Break to get our minds off our losses. And that is how our story takes off.
