chapter sixteen — the mephisto waltz
†
From the fog that surrounded the Kinkle mines, emerges a man. He was tall, walking on goat legs. A loincloth was all that he was wearing. Only two in Greendale would be able to recognize His true form, for they had seen it many times. The Dark Lord had risen and now he walked the Earth as a result of Sabrina fulfilling the prophecy. When the morning rose, Sabrina, Ambrose and Nicholas went back to the mortuary to speak with Zelda and Hilda.
When they arrive at the kitchen and spot the two Spellman sisters and Amatis, they are questioned by Zelda about where they had been all night. Sabrina asks of them to just listen to her for a second. "Miss Wardwell manipulated me into fulfilling a prophecy, one that's meant to bring about the end of the world." Amatis raises her head from her mug of tea and smiles lazily. "That sounds exciting," she says in the most sarcastic voice she could come up with. "Listen, cousin, because this is no longer funny. Because of me, the Dark Lord has assumed His original form and is somewhere in Greendale. And the Gates of Hell are going to open, releasing the hordes of Hell."
It was indeed not funny. Thoughts flash in her brain as Amatis tries to let it all sink in. She turns very pale, almost like a corpse, and the mug of tea she was holding fell onto the ground. It smashed into pieces, but no one paid much attention to it after what Sabrina told them. "Sorry, all of this is- This is all happening now?" "Now or very soon," the teenage witch responds. Nicholas cuts in to give more context to the situation. "According to the prophecy I found, His plan is to enslave the tribes of human and witch-kind, and to rule over everything with His demon army." The Spellman sisters and Amatis were staring with wide open eyes, still in shock. And as if that wasn't enough bad news for the day, Ambrose added some more.
"There's more. Sabrina created a mandrake that's absorbed her witch powers." Hilda asks if it absorbed all of them, but Sabrina continues by saying that it was not even the worst of it. Amatis was surely wondering how this could become any worse. Zelda asks what could possibly be worst than Sabrina being a mortal, but Ambrose had quite a response to that. "She meant to rule by the Dark Lord's side, as His queen." Zelda was officially pissed and steps forward. "How? Why- As his child bride? Well- Over my dead body. You're too young." "You'll stand against the Dark Lord, auntie," their cousin asks. "To defend Sabrina? Certainly."
Amatis stands up from her seat, her legs visibly wobbling and shaking. "Dear, please sit down. You're already a little weak, you must not strain yourse-" Hilda tries to pull the girl back down, but she shakes her head. "I-I will warn my friends. I will not let them be in harm's way." She tries to excuse herself, but Hilda did not let her go. "Then send Magnus with a message, but you will not leave the house." She tries to argue back, but she wouldn't hear it. Amatis rather didn't want to, but her family left her no choice. While they would all be busy with making the house Satan-proof, she would slip out and go to her dorm at the Academy. It was already quite Dark Lord-proof from the days she constantly defied him, so just fixing up what she already had but took down and adding a couple of new touches would do the trick.
