The first half of the day went by slowly, but it was finally lunchtime. Ava had invited Evelyn to eat lunch with her and her other friend, Skyler. As the three walked to the cafeteria, they were stopped by none other than Mop-Head Jack."Thanks for the escort, girls," he said, smirking. "But Evelyn's mine now."
Evelyn glanced nervously at Skyler, who gave her a supportive grin. "Says who?" the former asked. "Last time I checked, I was going to live my life without you. So thanks for your not-so-pleasant offer, but I'll pass." The trio walked away, leaving Jack spluttering behind them. Only when they reached the lunchroom did he catch up to them.
"Ev! Hear me out! You're mine, and you're supposed to follow me around and all that garbage! Right? Come on, why are you ignoring me?" Ava, Skyler, and Evelyn say at a table, completely ignoring the idiot in front of them. Skyler had started filling Evelyn in about school and gossip and classes. Meanwhile, Jack kept trying to get a word in.
"Evelyn! Ev! We're friends! Cmon, you can't ignore me! I'm too amazing to be ignored! Evelyn, listen to me!"
By that point, it was hard to ignore him. Evelyn gave the other girls a helpless look and could see Ava fuming almost visibly. Without even saying anything, the latter stood up and punched Jack hard.
"We're occupied at the moment, you can probably see. We can talk later," Ava said politely, smiling and sitting down at the table again. Evelyn took that as the hint to restart the conversation as if nothing happened. Jack finally turned around and went to sit at a table with the sixth grader from earlier that morning.

Evelyn had a study hall by herself after lunch, without her new friends. She found an empty table and sat down with a worksheet and a history textbook, trying to focus on the small amount of homework she'd been given. Surprisingly, the work wasn't too hard. Maybe she would actually do pretty well in her classes!Scratch that— enter Mr. Mop-Head Walterson. He sat down right next to Evelyn, who immediately moved to another table without a second's hesitation. Unsurprisingly, he followed her to the next table. She changed tables three more times until she finally found a full table to hide at. The other kids didn't even blink an eye when she asked to sit there, but they didn't attempt to start any conversation. She was infinitely glad when the bell rang, taking her to her only class without Mop-Head, science.
All during class, Evelyn found herself zoning out more than she usually would. She thought about what would've happened if her parents had never dragged her to Fillmore. She would still have Kayla, Phoebe, and Mary as her friends. They'd be laughing over a stupid Instagram post together in the back of the math classroom. They'd be going to each other's houses after school and pretend to do homework while actually trying to see who could make the best origami out of a notebook paper (Kayla always took the win, but Phoebe or Evelyn came in a close second. Mary didn't even try to hide how bad she was at it). Evelyn might have been jokingly teasing one of the many class clowns at school, or even helping them pull a prank on the history teacher, who everyone regarded as the most boring person to ever walk the planet. She was so deep in thought that she barely noticed the science teacher droning on about exams or erosion or whatever they were covering in class.
Only when the bell rang was she shaken out of her reverie. She looked up, confused. Had it really been that long? She sighed to herself, standing up and making her way into the halls. Only one more class to go, she reminded herself. She only had to make it until the end of the day.
