"Spill," his smooth, silky voice whispers sharply.
"What?" I question with a sigh, setting my green gaze on his long face, white hair and icy stare.
"I mean, how are you walking without crutches?" He says hushed. "Isn't it supposed to be two weeks?"
"Perhaps."
He lets out a huff before lazily stirring our concoction which is in a blender as I prep the jar. The drink looks gorgeous; a magenta smoothie with a fruity, flowery scent which I desperately want to drink.
"Secrets, secrets," he tuts. "I genuinely thought we had something."
"You thought wrong obviously," I laugh coldly. "You shouldn't be so stupid."
"You seem very... aggressive," he notes. "Very defensive. Now I'm used to this, but for some reason it's more so today. What's got you ticking Green Queen?"
"Nothing," I lie. "I'm perfectly fine. What's got you curious?"
"I'm not the only curious student in this school," he says putting down the wooden spoon. "Everyone is. Haven't you heard the muttering in the halls?"
"I tend to ignore dreary people," I look him up and down. "Hence why I disregard you. You see Fernsby, I've noticed you're the only person who tries awfully hard to speak to me. It's pathetic. Almost makes me think you have a crush on me."
"That's ridiculous," he laughs. "You're the last person I'd have feelings for."
"And why is that?"
"You're... you."
"Isn't that even more of a reason for you to have a crush on me?" I look at him with a titled head. Somewhere in the room I know Samson is smirking, watching over my every move and word making sure I didn't tell anyone else. Last night I asked him whether I should tell people, or whether there would be an announcement- turns out it was the latter. For now I'm supposed to play dumb and shrug off questions which is my specialty.
The snowy haired student glares at me before picking up the jug with a sigh, "The consistency is perfect. Let's pour."
I hold the container steady as he tilts the thick, smooth liquid into the glass jar. I smirk internally at how angry my words made Felix, biting my bottom lip as I can feel the anger resonate from my peer.
"Don't you have Mauve anyway?" Fernsby bites, lifting the jug away and into a hot, bubbly sink that will neutralise the toxins.
"Oh, Brent's been gossiping has he?" I chuckle lightly and nod. "Of course he has, I don't see why he wouldn't."
"So I take it as a yes."
"Honestly," I begin. "It's none of your business."
"Definitely a yes then."
I snap my eyes towards him and can't help but feel livid. Who the fuck does he think he is? Pushing my buttons, trying to get the latest gossip. I'm not some sort of entertainment for his airhead. "I suggest you learn to keep your nose out of other people's business. My life has nothing to do with yours, how many times do I have to establish that I am your superior? Now make notes on the poison before I lose it with you."
He only scoffs but does as I say, pulling out his book and making aggressive, quick flicks with his pen against the paper. I simply clean up the edges of the glass, put a cherry on top and then set it up on the white, china plate with green trimming.
Mr Caville walks into the room from the greenhouses, simply brushing past our lab station and to his desk, writing a title on the board before spinning on his heel and clasping his large hands with a satisfied grin. "Right. Students. Your time is up, please stop what you're doing and listen to me."
The class follows his instructions and waits patiently for him to begin talking. Mr Caville hasn't spoken to me today, or ever since I've got back from The Centre; I can tell he's curious due to him constantly glancing at me.
"Each pair will come up to the front of the classroom to present your poison. Describe in detail about why you chose certain ingredients and why you presented it in such a way. The winners get a free meal at Philip's, a human restaurant in the village."
"Are we allowed there?"
"With teacher supervision, yes."
"Damn," mutters Felix. "That does sound good."
"Let's begin with Miss Green and Mr Fernsby," he nods with a smile. "I noticed you brought something with you."
"Yes," I nod. "My secret ingredient which is very rare and only accessible from royalty. My mother has a mean appetite for her favourite poison, grey berries. They are grown outside of the Empire, out of the safety of the dome where it is very dangerous for normal demons. My mother grows her very own bush in her greenhouse, yet often goes out of her way to collect some from beyond the boarders due to their seasonable growth."
Felix presents the smoothie at the front desk of the classroom and stands next to me.
"Grey berries are also the most dangerous poison known currently, which I like to think is a metaphor for us. Felix and I are the top of Envy students, the most powerful if you will- with that comes our toxic nature. Envy demons are notorious for being selfish, we don't care if we hurt people in order to get what we want. Instead of necessarily being physically dangerous like wrath, we hurt people from the inside out through jealousy and lies. Hence, grey berries turn a victim's innards into liquid.
"Since grey berries often kills a victim in under ten minutes, we realised that we tend to inflict pain over time. Hence we decided to add Greek yogurt into the mix to make it into a smoothie, the grey berry juices are mixed into the yogurt and will prolong the affects."
Felix nods and takes over, "Since we wanted to make things personal, one of my key features is that I'm irritating. The lovely Olivia made sure to include this, so I thought it would make things more interesting," some of the class chuckle. "I made a blend of Devil's Daisies and Haffington leaves to acquire a natural irritant which will cause the mouth and oesophagus to burn and itch, as well as breaking them out into a hefty rash."
"Yet with this comes a somewhat pungent and earthy smell that isn't associated to a smoothie," I carry on. "So we also thought about our appearances. We are Envy students, we thrive in jealousy- and how do we make people green?"
"By looking and smelling nice," Felix responds. "Hence why we blended Banshee's Breath into the mix. This hides the smell and also makes it seem safe to drink- trustworthy. Which we are not. It hides its toxicity, which we like to do as well to seem more approachable."
"Banshee's Breath is also a renowned torture device used in Envy's kingdom," I continue. "A poison that I will also use when I become..." I pause and furrow my brows. What is to become of me? "Queen."
"Yet the blend didn't look pretty," Fernsby sighs and shakes his head. "Yet I'm the prettiest envy demon of them all. So we decided to add friggs, a natural pinkish dye to add to the flavour and make it look tasty- which I presume it is. Friggs are only a minor poison which causes belly aches to add to the other poisons."
"Thank you guys," Mr Caville says and claps, so does the rest of the classroom.
A knock sounds on the door rudely interrupting my applause. I huff and give a side eye view as the door opens.
A tall, curvaceous Lust demon enters the classroom with glossy blonde hair, plump red lips and a smokey eye. She wears a tight pencil skirt, white blouse with a couple buttons undone with a pair of high heels. "Mr Caville," she purrs. "I've come to collect Olivia Green, Principle Reynolds would like to see her."
The class' eyes latch onto me with confusion and interest. I simply huff and roll my eyes, walking over to my station to acquire my belongings, "Let's get this done then. Also, Mr Caville? It's truly an honour to win."
