Homeworld's Little Prodigy

Prologue: Onyx Emerges

It's been a few centuries since Pink Diamond was shattered and the war with the Crystal Gems had ended. The Diamonds tried to return back to their daily routines, but it was hard, knowing Pink was gone forever.

"Yellow... How..? How is it possible that a mere Rose Quartz shattered a Diamond..?" asked Blue Diamond, who had been grieving the most since Pink's shatter.

Yellow Diamond gave no response. She was just as upset about Pink Diamond, but she refused to talk about it. Her anger was clear in her expression, but she wanted nothing to do with the incident any longer. At the current moment, the two were observing the gem production on one of White's colonies, since White had isolated herself from the rest of Homeworld and the colonies after Pink's demise.

"Hmm..." Yellow analyzed the gems emerging from the colony, making absolute certain there were no Off-Colors in the group. She noticed through the screens a pair of white eyes watching the other gems from the shadows, "Blue, look at this."

"Hmm..?" Blue Diamond checked the screen Yellow was looking at, noticing the pair of eyes as well, "What is that..?"

"If it's an organic, then that kindergarten could be in peril. Come along, Pearl!" Yellow Diamond ordered as she headed down to the colony. Blue Diamond and her Pearl shortly followed them.

Upon arriving at the kindergarten, both Diamonds earned a multitude of salutes from various gems. The pair of eyes in the dark was quickly spotted as they tried to make their escape, but were snatched by Yellow Diamond, who lifted them up out of the darkness to get a better look at them.

Much to their surprise, this creature was a gem. Her skin was darker than any gem the Diamonds had seen before, while her pure white eyes contrasted her form. She wore a black and grey striped skirt with white diamonds sparkling all over it, sort of like White's cape. She had short, black hair, and her fingertips were white like her eyes.

"M-My Diamonds..!" she quietly saluted them, fear was the only emotion expressed in her eyes.

"Isn't this... An Onyx gem..?" Blue asked.

"Hmph. It would seem so..." Yellow responded, narrowing her eyes at the little gem, "What were you doing hiding in the dark? Why weren't you helping to expand the kindergartens?"

Yellow's demanding tone made the little black gem flinch, paralyzed with fear. She did not give a response, causing Yellow Diamond's patience to be tested.

"I will not stand for insubordination... You will answer me!"

Destabilization energy sparked at Yellow Diamond's fingertips. Onyx's eyes became wide when she noticed as she yelped and cowered before her superiors.

"Yellow, that's enough..." Blue Diamond coaxed, placing a gentle hand on Yellow's shoulder as she took the Onyx out of Yellow's hands, "Can't you see that she's already very cautious..?"

"Well, she should be! No gem survives an angry Diamond."

"Eep!!" Onyx curled up into a ball, tears brimming at her eyes as she refused to look at the angry gem matriarch.

"Yellow!!" Blue scolded, petting Onyx comfortingly, "Don't speak like that around one of White's gems... Especially one as precious as this little one."

"Tch." Yellow Diamond rolled her eyes, "So be it... But this is the first Onyx I've seen to emerge from one of our colonies."

"Yes, it is quite rare to see an Onyx..." Blue agreed, smiling at the shy gem she was now holding.

Onyx didn't really understand what they were talking about, but she was glad Yellow Diamond appeared to be calming down a bit.

"I know..! Let's take her to White and see what she thinks." Blue suggested, making both Onyx and Yellow's eyes go wide.
