dulcet

/ˈdʌlsɪt/adjective

(especially of sound) sweet and soothing

"THIS IS OUR NEW HOUSE?!".

Your shrieks of delight and excitement echoed off the walls of the slumbering house, white-washed walls and dark beams of wood standing out against the vibrant green of the glade it nestled in, yet somehow still fitting in perfectly.

Someone older would see that the house wasn't perfect, that the walls were cracked, that some of the beams were rotting, that it would need a lot of tender loving care to bring it to life once more.

But in your five-year-old mind, all you could see was the beauty and magic that would be lost on many people.

Fortunately, your parents must have seen something similar to you, because when they had come across it on their house hunting endeavours, they instantly knew that it was meant to be theirs.

"Y/n", your mother scooped you up into her arms and spun you around quickly, making you squeal. "Why don't you go and explore a bit while we unpack, and you can tell us all about what's outside when you get back".

You were instantly enamoured with the idea, already heading for the door.

"Don't go too far, make sure you can see the house", she called after you.

You ran out the door into the warm sunshine that drenched everything around you. The grass was long, and because you were so small, it rose up to brush against your waist.

You headed towards the treeline that surrounded the small open space, and stopped by a small brick well holding a rusty bucket, it looked like something out of a picture book.

You laughed out loud in pure happiness, and you could have sworn you heard another voice join in, a sweet, delighted giggle softly echoing your own.

You paused for a second in curiosity at the noise, but instantly forgot all about it when a blue butterfly flew right past your nose, making it scrunch up.

You started running after it without any thought, leaping through the grass into the firmer ground of the forest.

~

It was a cold morning, the delicate frost that had settled overnight had thrown a muffled blanket over the smoke and the never-ending noise of the city, muting everything ever so slightly.

It was still early, the sky had barely lightened, the street-lamps had only just been switched off.

The cold filled your soul and gripped your heart with icy fingers, only it wouldn't melt away when the sunshine inevitably returned, it would only numb to a dull, throbbing ache.

You tried to combat it with scalding hot coffee, that you gulped down desperately as you unlocked your car, but the heat only served to make you choke and wince at the burn when it slid down your throat.

You weren't really sure what to expect of today, you hadn't been home in a long time.

~

You managed to follow the butterfly for several minutes, stumbling over tree roots and clambering over the occasional low-hanging branch before it disappeared into a bush and out of your sight.
