Then There Was One

Pov/3rd person
The male laid there, empathetic, drain of all emotion. He heard a ruckus from the hallway, the laughter of cadets. I haven't laughed in a long time, he thought. And it was true, but when you see every friend you've had die right in front of you, it's kinda hard to laugh. The man was about to close his eyes and try to sleep, when,
"Levi!"
The man sighed, he got up and went to answer the banging on the door.
"What do you want Hanji?" the male asked.
"I just wanted to tell you that Commander Ervin wanted to meet you in his office."
Levi sighed, "Tell him, i'll be there in a little bit." he slammed the door in Hanji's face and went to put on a shirt. He buttoned his shirt and tied his cravat, and put on his SurveySurvey Corps Jacket. He sighed as he looked in the mirror. The male opened the door and stepped out of his quarters and headed toward the Commander's office.

Levi knocked on the door, then opened it slightly, "Hanji said you wanted to see me." The male looked around the room and saw one of the cadets from the 104th, Mikasa Ackerman, she saluted you the captain, and stood down when he nodded to her.
"Yes, Levi, sit down."
The raven did as he was told and sat in the chair in front of Commander Ervin's desk, Mikasa, next to him. Ervin pulled out a map, it showed what was a few Survey Corps bases, scattered around Titan Territory.
"There is some uncharted Titan territory that we have yet to cover. It's located around and in a forest, the trees grow tall so it's going to be dangerous, but I want you, Levi and Mikasa to lead an expedition. You may both select a number of cadets to a company you both. I expect you to leave sometime next week, and I want a report at least a week after you've both returned. Any questions?"
The captain and the cadet shook their heads.
"Good, and I would assume that you both already have in mind who you would like to take."
"I would like to take Eren and Armin with me, commander." Mikasa requested.
" Wise choice," said Ervin, "but i'm afraid Eren won't be able to go. Hanji is keeping him for testing. Armin can still go though."
"Understood."
"And you, Captain?"
Levi thought for a moment, analyzing every cadet, their skill set and their mentality.
"I shall take Bertholdt and Riener."

Levi groaned when Finrir his mare, kept trying to take the saddle off. She glared at Levi, and he glared back. After a while, Levi finally got the saddle on her, and he was ready to join the other cadets.
"Is everyone ready?" The captain asked. Everyone nodded. "Captain, if i may ask, what do you expect to find in the forest?" asked Armin.
Levi thought for a moment, "We'll probably find titans, possibly some abnormal titans as well. But anything specific, I'm not sure." he answered. Armin hummed a response. "Now if everyone's ready, let's head out."

The 5 soldiers headed out the gates, and rode straight through Titan Territory. They rode for hours, stopping every once in awhile to catch a breath, and to let the horses recuperate before going back at it again. A couple hours in, everyone was slightly suspicious that they haven't encountered a titan yet, or at least a sign of one, but nothing. Then from the distance, Armin spotted something. "Captain, 2 titans approaching"
" Looks like 15 meter and 10 meter. The ten meter seems to be an abnormal. Captain Levi, how do we proceed?" stated Reiner.
Levi thought for a moment, there weren't any trees or anything that they could use their ODM gear on. The only way to actually use them in a situation like this is going to be to actually get right in front of the titan, and that's risky as it is. Finally the captain came to a decision, "Mikasa, Riener, you to handle the 15 meter, Bertholt Amrin, you two get the horses out of the way, and help out with the abnormal."
Everyone agreed with their commands and did as they were told. Abnormal Titans are usually a little harder to take down, but since their brains are different from normal titans, there's always a chance that they'll do something worse than other titans. This abnormal in particular, had its arms waving up in their hair, making it difficult for Levi to get the anchor attached to the titan. He finally settled with attaching it to the under arm of the titan. Once he was in the titan, he noted the multiple stitches of on the nap of the titan. Interesting, he thought.
He heard the thunder of the 15meter falling to the ground, Levi was about to cut the nape of the abnormal, when its flinging arms grabbed onto levi dangling in the air. Levi's arms were squished together and it was hard for him to reach the ODM gear. Finally he heard the hiss of the gear, not his, but Mikasa's. She sliced the titan's nape, and released Levi as the titan fell to the ground.
"Captain, are you okay?" Bertholt asked. Levi responded with a nod.
"Captain Levi, if i may ask, why did it take you so long before you tried to cut its nape?" Armin asked.
Levi sighed, looking at the titan, already seaming away, "There was something unusual about the abnormal."
"Aren't abnormals alway the unusual ones?" Riener snickered, and Bertholt elbowed him in the chest, telling him to not to talk back to the captain.
"Yes, Reiner, but this abnormal, is ... different." the captain replied.
"How so?"Armin asked.
Levi looked at the titan, trying to think of an answer that would make the most sense. "The titan, when I grabbed my blades, i noticed that the titan had what looked like stitches. I don't know how to explain it but.." and before Levi could finish, Armin answered for him, "-someone is stiching up titans that have had their napes cut."
"Exactly."
"So what do we do now?"Mikasa asked
Levi got on the titan, before it evaporated completely, and inspected the bone beneath the nape. There were laceration marks and old scaring on the bone. Usually when one slashes the nape of a titan, the blade never reaches the actually bone, just the muscle tissue. So when there was stitches and actual scaring on the titan, Levi didn't know what to think. He's never seen anything like this. "Armin"
"Y-yes, Captain?"
"Take note of this. I want to make sure Commander Ervin knows about this."
"Yes Captain. I'll write this down right now."
Armin began to get his notebook out ready to start writing down when drops of water fell on his notebook. He looked up and saw the rain began to pour down. The blonde male looked around and and asked, "Captain, how far are we to get to the forest."
"A couple miles more I think. We should be able to find shelter in the trees."
Everyone nodded and headed for the forest in a triangle formation. Reiner and Bertholdt in the back, Mikasa and Armin in the middle, with Levi in at the lead. There wasn't any other titans throughout the ride so that was a relief. It started to get dark, as they group reached the forest. Titans aren't active during the night, due to the lack of melatonin, and so its slightly safer to go out at night.
Levi stopped in front of the tree line, "I want everyone to go in slowly, we don't know what's inside and you all are not allowed to start dying on me. Understood?"
"Yes captain."
Mikasa and Armin turned on their lanterns and headed in after Levi, Reiner and Bertholdt following. The tall trees prevented most of the rain from coming down, so it was a lot easier to see. Kinda.
Levi looked around, looking for anything suspicious. He turned on his own lantern so he could see better, he looked at the trees, Something about them seemed eerie. He looked closer at them, and saw claw marks. He was about to tell the others, when —
"CAPTAIN"
Levi turned to see Reiner in the hands of a titan. Normally Reiner can get out of a situation like this on his own, but the titan was literally squeezing the blonde.
"REINER" yelled Bertholdt as he used the ODM gear to get close enough to get to him. But the Titan pushed Bertholdt mid air, and he was slammed against a tree. Mikasa and Armin where already in the air as Levi began to use the ODM gear to circle around the titan to trip it. The titan fell with its arm under its chest. Mikasa cut its nape and Levi went to retrieve Reiner. They managed to get the blonde out of the titans grasp, alive. Barely.
"H-Hey guys, umm." Armin pointed at Bertholdt, who had a tree branch impaled in his chest, barely missing his heart. Levi went to Bertholdt and checked his pulse.
"Anything?" asked Mikasa.
Levi shook his head.
"Captain, what do we do?"
Levi didn't hear who asked, he was busy staring at Bertholdt's body. There was blood smeared in his forehead, and some blood coming out of his mouth. Levi looked back at Reiner, he was still breathing, which was good, he just didn't know how the expedition was going to continue. It would obviously be hard for the cadets to leave one of their own, but it had to be done.
"Armin, i know you're no medic, but check if Reiner has any broken bones." Armin nodded and went to do as he was told, and Mikasa tried to get the horses under control as they were frightened by the titan attack.
Levi was busy staring at the evaporating titan, trying to figure out how there it was out at night, there isn't enough light for one to be roaming around, and even if there was, it couldn't have had that strength, at least this late at night, it couldn't. He climbed on the neck of the titan and saw scaring and stitches. Same as the last titan, suspicious.
"Captain Levi, I think Reiner has a few broken ribs, and some bruising, but other than that, he's fine, I guess"
"Thank you, Armin. Now I want you to prop him up on something, and try to bandage up his injuries to the best of your abilities. I don't know how long we're going to be in this forest." Levi mumbled the last part. He had no idea how long it would take to get out of the forest, or how long it would take to reach the end of it. And their the giant trees surrounding them, and a sudden Titan attack, they had no idea what else was hiding in those trees. This was the first time Levi was genuinely scared in a long time.
Reiner's breathing getting worse, Armin and Mikasa had already bandaged him the best they could, but Reiner was still unconscious.
"How do you suppose we're going to continue with him, like how are we going to get him on a horse?" Mikasa asked, moving her bags out of her eyes. Levi has already begun thinking about this earlier. It was pretty clear that Renier couldn't ride a horse, he obviously needed serious medical attention. If only they had a wagon, then they could lay Reiner in it, and possibly Bertholdt.
"Mikasa, do you think that if we prop up Reiner and tie him to you, you'll be able to ride with him, until he's the slightest bit healthier."
Mikasa nodded, and Levi helped prop Reiner into Mikasa, as Armin tied him to her. Once everyone felt that they could continue, Reiner began coughing blood, which alarmed everyone.
"Captain, i'm sorry to say, but i think we need to leave Reiner here" Armin said, with Mikasa agreeing. Levi nodded, and propped him against the tree next to Bertholdt. Everyone took one last look as they said goodbye to their friends. they sighed and continued on.

An hour had passed and the rain continued. It stayed like this for some time, everything seemed fine, until a giant had grabbed Armin, and took him into the trees. Armin screamed, and Levi and Mikasa went after him, but it was too dark and the rain made it extremely difficult to see. The two lost the Titan, and Armin.
"Captain, we have to go back for him." Mikasa pleaded.
"How" Levi grabbed her, "how do you suppose we go after him? Can you see through all this rain and trees, because I certainly can't."
Mikasa wiped her tears as she heard her best friend's screams. "Fine."
She got on her horse, and Levi got on his, Armin's horse had ran away during the chaos. They continued on, lighting and thunder being seen and heard every so often. Every time there was thunder, it made the two look around frantetly, searching for Titans in the distance. The two surprising found a clearing which looked as if the rain never touched it. It was a bit suspicious, yes, but they were in desperate need of a rest.
They got off their horses and layed on a tree, trying to just breath. it was all going pretty well actually, the horses were getting a much needed rest, as they were also eating some of the grass and other vegetation on the forest floor, and the two cadets were falling asleep.

Levi woke up to Mikasa's screaming as there was a titan looking at both of them, at a very close proximity. The titan wasn't moving though, it was just staring, which one would say is equally as terrifying as one eating you. The 2 soldiers stayed extremely still. Eventually, the Titan left, and Levi and Mikasa both let out a breath the didn't know they were holding in.
" W-why was i-it..."
"I don't know," Levi said bluntly. He half expected the be eaten by now, he had no clue why it just left without doing anything.
Suddenly, a red haired and a light brown haired titan appeared during grabbed Levi before he could even see them coming. Mikasa screamed, but the titans completely ignored her. They kept their attention completely in the Captain.
"CAPTAIN!"
"Mikasa, run. RUN. Get to a b-base, get to the wall if you have to, just r-run."
Mikasa didn't know how to react, she began to use her ODM gear but one stern look at Levi's face told her that it wasn't worth fight them. She did as she was ordered, she got into a horse, which happened to be Levi's, and rode away as fast as she could.
The two titans looked at Levi, and the red haired one smiled. They both stared at Levi, as he struggled to move. And in a horse voice, they both, in usison, said, "L-levi"

Mikasa kept going as she heard Levi's blood curdling scream. It was the first time she actually heard her captain scream. But she couldn't turn back, she saw the opening to the forest and rode towards it, and continued until she and the horse could no longer go. They stopped about 3 or 4 times, and somehow avoided any titans. Which Mikasa found strange, but she could care less. She just wanted to get to the base. She rode for a few hours more, until she saw the base. She began to cry as she entered the gates.

"Mikasa, your back." Commander Ervin said. Mikasa nodded her head. "Where's the rest of your team? Where's Levi?"
Mikasa got off the horse, and fell to the ground, and said in a shaky voice,
"Dead. They're all dead."
