'He did it. He killed her,' I whispered as everything suddenly became clear.
'No. No, I can't, no I won't believe it. There's just no way-'
'Matt, all the evidence points to him. I'm sorry,' I said, placing my hand on the shoulder. He turned to me with irritation and sadness in his eyes.
'You're not sorry though, because if you were, you wouldn't be taking my money.' At his words, a little smile appeared on his lips, causing me to give him a large and smug smile.
'True, but I did warn you so I shall take these earnings,' I said, standing up over the Cluedo board to lean across the table and pick up the hefty pile of 20 dollars, 'with no guilty conscience.'
I gave a little wave to my opponent, who said dumbfounded at the table closest to the bar of the Grill, hearing him say in an amazed voice 'Miss Scarlet with the rope...Never saw it coming.'
'Oh, get over it, Matt,' I said over my shoulder before turning round to give him a sadistic smile. 'Women are even more capable of murder than men.'
'And how'd you figure that?' he asked, smiling as he cleared the board into its box.
'How many female murderers, serial killers and general psychopaths have you heard of?' I asked, counting off each one on my fingers as I said them.
'Beside you?' he retorted with a flirty smile.
'Cute. But seriously.'
'Not as many as men but so what?'
'What does that prove?'
'That men are more emotionally damaged than women?' he said with a laugh before wiping down the table as the game was cleared away.
'Women don't get caught,' I replied with a wink before turning my back on my friend and walking towards the entrance to the Grill where a frantic Caroline burst through the doors. 'Woah, slow down, Car. They won't have run out alcohol.'
Yet, despite my words, Caroline didn't seem to have heard me. Instead, she looked into my eyes like something was on the tip of her tongue yet she didn't know how to say it. 'Stefan and Elena broke up!'
*
'Okay, tell me again because I'm not sure I quite believe it,' I said to Caroline from one of the corner booths of the Grill; an untouched cup of tea in front of me.
Caroline sighed, closing her eyes for a moment before opening them. 'I know, I still can't wrap my head around it but this is what Elena told me. She said that she got a really weird text from Stefan last night at the party, saying that he wanted to see her but she couldn't because she was looking after Jer. Anyway, this morning, she went to go and see him and he just ended it. She said he might as well have ended it over text!'
'But...That just doesn't sound like him...' I muttered, leaning my back against the back of the booth as I mulled it over in my head for the fifth time. 'I mean, I know Stefan's a prat but I didn't think he was that bad.'
'See, that's the thing,' Caroline said, leaning closer to me, taking a brief look round the Grill before speaking in a hushed voice. 'Stefan called me the second Elena hung up and told me his side of the story. Apparently, he called her over and was about to speak to her when Damon came in and they started flirting.'
'As usual,' I mumbled.
Caroline gave a sound of agreement before continuing. 'Anyway, he said the reason he was going to end it with her was because she seemed way more interested in his brother than him and the way she acted when he appeared proved it. Stefan seems to think it's to do with her recent transformation into a vampire but he doesn't really care anymore.'
