Hey y'all! I'm new to writing and am always looking for ways to improve, so feel free to leave ideas and feedback in the comments. Thank you and enjoy!

(Peso's POV)

"And that should do it." I say, finishing up the bandaging on (hopefully) the last patient of the day. I'm quite tired, work hasn't been easy on me. It's always injured fin here, damaged tail there, over and over again for hours. I enjoy it though, I couldn't be any happier knowing that I've helped so many creatures out there.

"Hey, uh, Captain, what time is it?" I ask, hoping its a reasonable time to take a nap.

"About a quarter till 6. Why do you ask?"

"I'm thinking about getting a bit of rest, I'm awfully tired."

"Of course!" he said, slightly chuckling, "You've been working non-stop for hours now, I'm surprised you haven't passed out!"

"I sure would've if I was you, mate! " Kwazii jumped in on the conversation, playful as usual. "You look real worn out there bud. Just lookin at you is givin me a headache. Go on and get some sleep."

Kwazii was right, I do have a headache. I slowly made my way over to my room. As soon as I walked in, I headed straight for the bed. It's almost as if it was glowing, just waiting for me to lie down on the soft sheets. And when I tell you it felt like heaven as I covered myself in my layers of blankets, oh I mean it. I'm sure I was out of it in a matter of seconds. I could've stayed there forever, until-

*KNOCK KNOCK*

I'm abruptly woken up by a loud knocking on my door. I don't know how long I've been asleep for, but I sure would've liked for it to be a bit longer. I looked over at the clock,

12:01 AM

Who would need me so late at night? As I start to sit up, I go through the possibilities. Waking me up at such an odd hour, it must be something urgent! Picking up the pace, I grab my med kit and rush over to the door.

"SURPRISE!!!" It was Kwazii, beaming a smile larger than I've seen from him in a long time.

"Oh my Kwazii, you nearly gave me a heart attack! I thought somebody was in danger or something!"

"Danger? Why would anyone be in danger? I'm here to wish me best friend a happy birthday!"

In a mix of sleepiness and exhaustion, I managed to forget my own birthday! Looking a little closer, he seems to be holding a present in his hands.

"Oh Kwazii, you really couldn't wait till the morning now could you."

"Nope! I really couldn't. Mind if I come in?"

We both chuckle a bit as he welcomes himself into my room. If I knew he was coming, I would've cleaned up a bit. We both sit down on my bed as he hands me the gift. He seems a bit nervous, but very excited nonetheless. It's not wrapped too well, but you can tell he tried. Let's just say Kwazii isn't the most artistic member of the crew.

I open the present to see a cute little photo book. On the cover, written in his messy handwriting, were the words, "Best Mateys" in big letters. The book is filled with a bunch of photos of me and him on adventures. Each picture brings back hundreds of memories together. As I flip through each page, we talk for hours about all the fun times we've had saving all sorts of creatures. On the very last page of the book is a very badly drawn heart with a little message inside of it:

"Dear Peso, I couldn't thank you enough for all the good times we've had. Thank you for being the bestest of me best mateys. I couldn't have asked for a better one myself.

Love, Kwazii"

Something about that message made me feel so warm and fuzzy. He's always so tough on the outside, so him showing that bit of love and kindness shows that he really means it. I really couldn't have asked for a better birthday gift.
