The doorbell rang loudly at midnight. Lilly woke up, rather frustrated that someone had arrived at such an odd time. She looked beside her and her husband was sound asleep. She stomped towards the door and opened it. She saw a man she didn’t recognize, standing drenched in the rain. She invited him in and gave him a towel to wipe himself. He coughed and she instantly felt sorry for him. He had ruffled, wet, grey hair and his clothes were torn. He didn’t have any shoes on so his feet were dirty and had cuts on the soles of hi feet.
“Who are you?” she asked with a look of sympathy on her face. “I am Billy, Tom’s uncle. I have been running from the police for the past few days. Do you mind if I stay here for a while?” He replied. Lilly was too shocked to hear this. Tom was busy sleeping upstairs but he never said he had an uncle. She was positive that this man who looked homeless was lying about who he was. And why was he running form the police? She thought. Was he a criminal? “Tom never told me he had an uncle and why are you running from the police?” She asked him. “I’ll answer your questions later. First call Tom downstairs and could you put my bag in a room?” She looked down to see he had a small bag which was also wet. Strange, she thought, how she hadn’t notice it before. She picked it up and took it upstairs.
“Tom, wake up! Someone just came home and he says he’s your uncle” Said Lilly desperately trying to wake him up. He finally sat up and asked “What? He is here already? I thought he was coming next month.” So he really did have an uncle, she thought. Tom ran downstairs with a huge grin on his face. He embraced his uncle and said “Uncle Billy! You’re here! What happened to you?” Billy smiled and replied “Hey Tom! How have you been? Sorry I had to come early. The police think I am the criminal when I am actually the secret agent! Stupid police these days can’t tell the difference between an innocent man and the criminal!” Lilly was really surprised to hear this and she had so many questions for Tom like why he never mentioned Billy before. Even though the uncle had explained everything she still had her doubts.
Lilly pulled Tom into the kitchen and whispered “Tom I don’t believe a word he says! He just looks like a beggar looking for shelter and besides have you even seen your uncle before this day?” Tom replied with a look of anger and shock in his eyes.”Lilly, how could you say that? No I haven’t seen him before but I got a call from him last week and have some pity. The poor old man has struggled a lot for the past few days. Now I am going outside to give him fresh new clothes so please make a cup of tea for him.” With that he stormed out of the kitchen. Lilly was shocked at his outburst but was not ready to believe a single word he had to say.
To prove that Billy was lying she ran upstairs and opened his bag. She emptied it until she found what she was looking for. She smiled like she had won a lottery and ran to Tom. “Tom! Look! I found his driving license!” She thrust it in Tom’s face.
Tom was so shocked that his entire face went pale. “Oh is my god! It says that his name is Peter! I can’t believe this! He is not my uncle Billy!”
“What else have I been trying to convince you about?” She screamed.
