She heads down the dimly lit cobblestone path towards the street. Her keys sparkle in the moonlight as they dangle from her ring finger. She approaches the "driver's" side door, wrapping her soft hand around the handle before gently tugging on it. The door opens, raising her hand to wave goodbye to her family. She sits down and swings her legs into the car, grasping the fabric of her dress tightly in her hand ensuring she does not close the delicate white lace in the door as it shuts. The key turns and the engine rumbles, she cranks up the radio, grasping the steering wheel tightly in her hands. Her foot presses the gas and she drives into the night.
With her windows rolled down the cool breeze kisses her soft caramel skin while she continues her long journey home with 195 miles remaining until she reaches her cozy townhouse in the middle of Albuquerque. A small smile forms in the corners of her lips when her favorite song begins to blare out of her speakers, she starts to dance along to the beat. "You mix that creole with that negro to make a Texasbama." She sings along with the song not realizing that her car is furiously sputtering. Her car unexpectedly jerks causing her heart to race, and she is thrown into an instant panic. She looks out the window and locks her eyes on the large green sign. "Albuquerque 195 miles" She mutters in frustration. " I am in the middle of fucking nowhere." Her car jerks again one last time, and the engine suddenly shuts off, she turns on the car's emergency lights pulls off the highway, and turns onto the small dirt road. She starts to frantically dig through her purse in search of her phone. "Hey Siri call State Farm roadside assistance." The phone rings for a few seconds before a very soft-spoken woman answers the phone.
"Hello thank you for calling State Farm. My name is Tina, How may I help you?"
" Well my car has broken down in the middle of fucking nowhere," Angelica says angrily.
"Ma'am, I have plugged in your phone number and pulled up your policy I just need to have you verify your name and date of birth." She says in a calm voice.
"My name is Angelica Stangard, my date of birth is June 10th of 89."
"Thank you so much Miss Stan....." Angelica cuts her off immediately.
"Please call me Angel."
"My apologies Angel, can you tell me where you're located?"
Angel gets out of her car and looks towards the highway. " I-I- dont know, I am on a little dirt road on Interstate 25."
"Do you remember the last mile marker you passed?"
"Oh yeah I just passed a sign that said I was 195 miles away from Albuquerque. I pulled off at the next exit and turned onto the little dirt road."
"Miss..... I mean Angel it will take about two hours for someone to arrive. If anything changes please call back."
In a fit of rage Angel begins yelling "TWO HOURS WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FUCK." She hangs up the phone and walks back to her car. She sits in the driver's seat, she reaches over and grabs the book from the passenger seat. "Well since I will be here for awhile." She opens her book and gently slides out the book mark. She continues in the exact place she left off. She licks her finger and turns the page. The trickle of raindrops begins its tattering against her car. She peeks over the edge of the book to glance out the window before going back to reading.
Her eyes begin to get heavy at the sound of the rain crashing into her car.
The sound of a light knock on the window scares her out of her sleep. She gasps and leans away from the window. The silhouette of a large man lingers outside of her window.
"Ma'am, I'm Tim, I am from State Farm."
"She leans towards the window and peeks at his shirt."
The name Tim was skillfully sewn into the bright red fabric.
