Her junior year of high school just having let out, a girl goes to an "end-of-school" party. She is a fairly bright and musically gifted 17-year-old, though she has a history of drug and alcohol use. Molly, this being her name, after arriving at the party becomes intoxicated (and possibly high) and proceeds to fornicate with a young man. This young man, being named Chris, is a vastly intelligent boy in school subjects, but seems unwise in matters in "non-book" material. The two not being completely intact of mind, they are unsafe in their intercourse and the boy impregnates Molly.

At the time of her impregnation, Molly is continuously using several drugs, including (but not limited to) alcohol, cocaine, and marijuana. When she discovers she is pregnant, she immediately ceases all drug use, but the child's delicate nervous system already having been created is destined for a future of dysfunction. She informs both her parents and the father of her pregnancy.

Having already conceived a child prior to this one, Chris is horrified by the news that she is pregnant, and thus does not inform his parents. Molly's mother, having given birth to her at 17 herself, says she will support her whether she keeps the baby or not. Molly decides she will keep the baby, but knwing that she is only 17 and cannot provide the child with an adequate home, she chooses to place the baby for adoption in lieu of the traditional means of parenting.
