POV Nadia:-
Guns and gangs were all I knew about the streets. I never left our house without a gun tucked in my skirts waist band. My big sister homeschooled me, she was a qualified teacher but she was out of work currently. It was only the three of us, me, Kadee and Shane. “Nadia!” Kadee called. “Come on, it’s time for school!” I sighed and got dressed. Kadee got away from gangs, me, not so lucky, but to be fair she had mom and dad, ex-gangsters, to help her with college money and stuff. But before I could be saved they were killed, by old enemies. Now I was a member of Shane’s gang, their favourite, their undercover girl. You see, I don’t look like a child of a gang family, I don’t even look like I’m in a gang at all. When I’m undercover I wear normal clothes but usually I'm in hoddies and black skinny jeans. “Nadia!” Kadee called again, getting cross. “Come on, Nad, I’ve got an interview later.”
“Really?” I asked, running down the stairs. I was just an average fourteen year old girl, normal body, thin, inside strength, nothing out of the ordinary. That’s why I’m so good undercover.
“Yeah, I’m still looking for a job, Nad, we need money.” Kadee answered.
“I’ve still got two years of school left, Kay.” I told her.
“We need the money, Nad, you’ll just have to go to public school.” She sighed. “Breakfast, kid, the quicker you are the more you learn, and the more you learn the less you need to learn at public school.”
“Alright.” I answered, getting my cereal and scoffing it down.
“Hey, Nad, we still on for eight?” Shane asked.
I looked at our sister for an answer, she nodded. “Yeah.”
“Just be careful, Nadia.” Kadee told me firmly.
“What? You’re not worried about me, Kay?” Shane asked, tossing an apple in the air and catching it smoothly.
“She’s fourteen, Shane, you’re eighteen.” She replied, in case you’re wondering, she’s twenty two.
“So? I was about her age when you brought me into this.” He told her.
“Yeah? And I was stupid to do that.” She said firmly. “I should never have done that, Shane, you were so young.” Shane sighed. Every morning they had a similar argument. “Nadia, we need to start now.”
I sighed and nodded; we sat in the schoolroom and studied for a few hours. I was ahead in my studies about a year, so if I went to public school I’d be in the year above. For a few hours, we worked, by six my sister had to go to her interview. I'd hoped for few hours to myself but an hour later when I was just walking out of the bathroom, wrapped in a towel when the front door slammed open and Shane came home, accompanied by the gang. “Nad!” He called up.
“Yeah?” I asked.
“Almost ready? It’s quarter past seven.” He called.
“Almost, Shane, I’ve just got out the bath, so I’d prefer it if the boys didn’t come upstairs.” I shouted down.
There were a few wolf whistles. “Shut it, guys, that’s my sister.” I heard Shane growl quietly.
Laughing quietly to myself I went in my room and turned on the hair dryer. In half an hour I dried my long brown hair, brushed it, curled it and put it in a high ponytail. Chose a ‘normal girl’ outfit and put it on, after drying myself, of course. And I lastly applied my makeup in a natural style and put on my jewellery. The last rays of the chilly November sun were disappearing as I looked out of the window.
“Nadia!” Shane called. “Come on, hurry up!” Sigh, I slipped on my converse and ran down the stairs, I sat on the couch, settling in the middle of the two boys I knew fancied me as I tied my laces. “Right, Nad, the gang initiation is tonight, you know they’re targeting you.”
