Parker left some time after lunch. He even went to say goodbye to Poppy and offered to take her home. But what shocked me most was that she had accepted the offer. She hated it, when I took her home and tried to get out of it every single time. Well, I guess by letting him take her, she kind of had gotten out of me taking her home today.
Mom cringed every time she heard Poppy talking about taking the bus. It was okay to do so in her neighborhood but in ours it was mostly employees who actually took the bus. It wouldn't be long until Mom bought her a car.
She was probably just waiting to find out what Poppy was looking for in a car. Or maybe she'd just offer her to make use of one of the cars in our car pool. Our underground garage held up to 15 cars and we were pushing that limit.
It was late afternoon, when I decided to suck it up and call Christy. I really didn't have a chance. I would only make it worse by waiting any longer. How was I supposed to make people believe our marriage was real if I kept Christy until the last minute. Definitely not an option. But maybe I should go over to have one last-
Nah, I slammed the brakes on my thoughts. This was what I needed to avoid. Damn. I grabbed my phone and held it to my ears while I waited to be connected.
She picked up after a few rings. "Hello?"
"Hi Christy."
"Hey babe, I haven't heard from you in a while. Did you miss me?"
My jaw dropped open. It had been one day since the funeral. Two, if today counted. I hated nothing more than clingy girls.
"Ahh, actually we need to talk."
"Do you want me to come over?", she hinted with her deep satiny voice.
After having Poppy around all the time and listening to her feisty comebacks, Christy's cheesiness made me want to throw up.
"No, I guess."
"Okay, what do you want to talk about then?"
Yeah, about what? What exactly was I supposed to tell her? I've been using you when I was in love with a girl I want to marry in five days. What a disaster. I seemed to be thinking that a lot lately. Fuck my life.
"Do you want me to tell you what I'm wearing right now?", she suggested. Good grief. Did I have to spell it out for her? I had figured I couldn't go wrong with 'We need to talk'. Apparently I was wrong.
"Thanks, but we really need to talk about us."
That caught her attention rather quickly. I imagined her to raise an eyebrow. "Go ahead."
I cleared my throat. "I, ah..." I decided to stick to the truth as far as possible. "I met someone else."
She shrieked. "Excuse me? What do you mean, you met someone else?"
"Exactly what I said. I met another girl."
"You...Do you like her more than me?"
Obviously. Otherwise I wouldn't break up with you to marry her, wouldn't I? Only she didn't know about the marriage yet. Should I keep it to myself? Or tell her, so she knew I was being serious. I was weighting my options and went all in.
"I met her a few weeks ago. I've been thinking about her ever since. When we finally met again I tried to resist her. But I couldn't." Sheesh, I sounded like a wimp.
"So you betrayed me?"
Ahh, I hadn't seen this one coming. Maybe Poppy had been right and I should have made lists to cover all potential questions and outcomes so I could have practiced what to say. That made me sound even worse. Since when did I care?
