THE CLOCK TICKED INTO A NEW DAY, and with a new day came new situations, or the aftermath of old ones that took place the night before.

there was tension at the kitchen table.

awkward tension.

because lexie was completely silent as she ate her breakfast, not saying a word to miles, who narrowed his eyes from across the table at her.

the kitchen was quiet, too quiet.

like the kind of quiet that made the air feel heavy and the clinking of spoons sound like gunshots.

lexie was avoiding everyone's eyes like it was a sport. miles was slouched at the table, still half-asleep, and definitely not glancing at her every five seconds.

kate caught wind of this instantly.

she narrowed her eyes. "okay. what's wrong with you two?" she looked between them awkwardly, but lexie didn't answer. she shoved a spoonful of dry cereal into her mouth like it was a muzzle.

"nothing," miles muttered, not looking up.

kate raised a brow. "i thought you guys are little best friends now? you bonded, healed, remember?" she repeated their words at this same exact table from not that long ago.

lexie made a strangled noise and nearly choked on a cheerio.

kate stared between them. "did you—did something happen?" she was genuinely curious at the shift in tone around the table,

this caused miles to finally glance up, eyes slightly narrowed. "didn't you like it better when we didn't get along?" he questioned like a smart ass,

kate blinked. "so something happened." she had her verification right there.

"nope. nothing. nothing happened. just tired. tired and moody and emotionally repressed. like usual." lexie finally spoke up for the first time, talking so fast that you could hardly understand what she was even saying.

"...right," kate said slowly. "you're being super chill and normal right now." she said sarcastically as she looked between them, pretending to go along with their bullshit for about five seconds.

miles gave a dry laugh. "you don't say." the sarcasm in his voice was evident as well.

the silence returned, even louder than before.

lexie wouldn't even look at him, and miles pretended not to care.

lexie scarfed down her cereal quickly before running over to the sink to throw her bowl in it, nearly tripping over her foot on the way there.
