chapter ten

it was another cold winters day and everyone was currently watching the boys hockey game. lucy was along side diana, ruby, and josie.
josie and lucy got over our differences for the most part. they had a tolerance for eachother which lucy was fine with considering that meant she was slowly getting over her racist mindset.
the girls cheered on the boys as anne came up beside them and they greeted her.

"ruby, you're supposed to be covering the game." anne said but ruby was focused on the boys. "where are the highlights? do you even know the score?" she asked again making ruby finally look at her.

"it's just a school newspaper, anne. not the daily telegraph." josie said.

"we don't even need an article about the game we're all here." ruby said making lucy laugh.

"she's busy ogling you know who." tillie said from behind them. suddenly billy came to a sharp turn near them making ice scrape off and hit josie and anne.

"oh!" josie exclaimed with a smile. billy smirked at her which made lucy feel uneasy. not sure why she felt that way, she ignored the feeling. he then turned to her with a wink making her smile to herself. the girls laughed, they seemed to not notice the exchange between the two, so lucy laughed with them.

"cad! bounder!" josie called out to him as he left.

"josie! you've really caught billy's eye!" tillie said and josie looked at lucy with a smirk. lucy rolled her eyes.

"alright, i'll write the article." anne pulled out the paper and prepared to write. "who are the team captains?" she asked.

"gilbert." ruby said.

"and?" anne asked again.

"whoever." ruby replied.

moody passed by and tipped his hat.

"diana." he greeted but stumbled as soon as he did. he managed to stay on his feet, though.

"going to take pity on poor moody?" josie laughed.

"you know my family won't allow it." diana replied.

"too rich to be a minister's wife?" josie replied as gilbert approached them. lucy smiled as they made eye contact and he smiled back.

"isn't ruby covering the game?" he asked anne.

"ruby's very preoccupied." tillie responded. "with a certain someone." gilbert gave a confused look and glanced at ruby who was smiling. he raised an eyebrow and turned back with a nod.

"he noticed me. he looked right at me and smiled." ruby beamed as she turned to them. lucy laughed and smiled back at her.

"you're delusional." josie said making them laugh.

"ruby blythe." ruby continued.

"how long have you liked him, ruby?" lucy asked.

"since forever." diana said. lucy laughed.

"how could i not!" ruby exclaimed. the game seemed to die down as lucy noticed a tall man and a girl that seemed to be his daughter approach. she recognized them as the people that make the hockey sticks. anne walked over to them.

"is the game over?" lucy asked diana. she nodded.

"i assume they're just messing around now." she replied. gilbert skated away from the man and the girl, so lucy called out to him and waved him over. she walked a little away from the others so they couldn't hear her.

"what's going on, lucy?" he asked.

"i'm conflicted, gilbert." she confessed. "billy talked to me about how he's expected to end up with josie so i asked him if he does like her but he told me no but now he's acting as if he does but also acknowledging me and i-"
