"Stand up straight. Keep your eyes just above the horizon. Never speak out of term. A lady shall, and will always keep silent in the presence of royal men. "
I stare up at my mother as I pray the four bulky brown backed books stayed still upon my head as she continued forward with our morning lessons. I had grown bored with them as I was due to be suited to the prince over seas next year, on my twenty first birthday.
"Samara, are you paying attention?"
I jolted my head up back towards her, causing the books to topple down from my head, landing on my feet. I yelp as I reached down and rubbed the top of my bare foot.
"Really Samara, how is it you still have yet to keep you mind concentrated on on lessons?"
"Mother I'm trying, I can clearly be a lady when need be. I do not see why we still must continue our lessons. I have one more year before that man takes me away, bedding me as his wife. Let me enjoy my time with you and father."
I pull my shoulders back as she lifts my chin. She gives me a small smile as she grabs my hand sighs.
"Maybe I taught you too well in your lessons, yes. That's it. Well, it can't be helped. Let's sway your father to come down for dinner this evening? Shall we?"
I nod my head as a pure, smile beams on her ivory skin. I follow behind her as we make our way through the palace, towards my fathers study. After the festival, he'd locked himself in there trying to find ways to meet our people's demands. Though, that is never to happen. I learned at a young age that meeting everyone's needs, was purely beyond the human will. But, we as the royal family strive to meet as many as we can.
My mother reaches for the door before she pauses. I watch as a look of uncertainty flashes in her steel grey eyes. My father was kind, just like my mother. But, at times like this he could become a man of despair. Which, from the look in her eyes, was unsettling.
I place my hand on her shoulder and smile. Without knocking I push the door open.
"Father, I've come to see you!"
I hear my mother snicker behind me as we continued into the room. If I were correct he'd be near the window over looking the gardens. I peek past a few massive book selves before I spot him.
"Ah, Samara. What brings you here. I see Lilian is with you as well." He smiles as his eyes fall on my mother.
"We've come to ask you to join us for a meal father."
He closed the book in his hand as he places it on the desk. A bright white smile paints his tan skin as he look at me. His dark hair glimmered in the shine of the sun as he walked towards me, holding himself with the upmost of grace and power. His golden eyes held nothing but love as he stared upon me and mother.
"How could I say no? Shall we?"
He motions for me to interlock our arms as we all strolled out of the study. We slowly made our way to the private dinning hall as mother and father discussed the recent events in the kingdom. Many people looked down on my mother for her unworldly looks. She was pale, her hair a crimson red, almost resembling the blood moon. And her eyes, as black as a shadow. My father on the other hand resembled nothing more than then sun itself, he shined while my mother glimmered like the moon on a starless night. I took after both, with my dark hair bestowed from my father, along with my golden eyes at their center, but black surrounded them. My skin as pale as my mother but my heart as big as both of them.
"So dear, how are things going in your study?"
My mother ask pouring a glass of wine for my father as he takes his seat at the head of the table.
He lets out a uneasy sigh as he bring the golden cup to his pinkish lips.
"Not as well as I'd like, the demands seem to be more and more unreasonable. I'm not sure I can even meet the half of them this time around."
I take a bite out of my bread as they continue their discussion on the demands once more. Of course I listened, but as they day draws to a close my mind wondered away to the man who was to make me his.
I had yet to meet him, I have not seen a portrait, heard of him, nor do I know his first name. All I've been informed of is him status and who he is the son of. But from records we hold, King Vladimir's wife never bore a child. But, that mystery child is who I am to marry in a years time.
"Darling, are you well? You look a bit ill."
I look up towards my father and smile. Of course he'd see that I wasn't well of with something. I took in a deep breath before speaking.
"Father I-"
"YOUR MAJESTY!"
All of us turned our heads towards the guard who broke through the door, panic instilled on his face as he tried to catch his raging breath.
"What is it Collin?"
My mother rose from her seat before he was able to speak, he was silenced as a sword staked his chest. Blood poured from the fatal wound as he fell to the ground in a heap. My eyes landed in terror on the assassin. His read hair long, reaching waist as his face was covered in black cloth. But his jade green eyes stared at me with such hatred.
"Lilian, get Samara out of here."
My father calmly rose from his seat, drawing his sword from his side. My mother grabbed hold of my hand trying to pull me away. But something in my heart told me, I would never seen him again.
"Father! We can't! What will become of you?" I shout as my mother wrapped her hands around me, forcing me away.
I watched as a sad smile found it's way on my father strong face. Fear was evident in those golden eyes of his as he stared at me. Without a word he turned his back to us and held his sword high.
My mother dragged me from the hall, I followed behind her with tears in my eyes as we made our way to the palace doors.
Just before we opened them, my mother placed her hands gently on my shoulders forcing me to look up at her.
"I love you, you know this don't you my dear child?"
Her words were full of sorrow as she stared at me with those voided eyes.
"I must help your father, as the next heir you must esca-"
I'm sure my screams were heard across the kingdom as the sound of flesh tearing echoed in my ears. Blood dripped from my mothers mouth as she fell to heap on the white floor. That same copper scent filled my nostrils as her body laid there motionless.
"LILIAN!"
I snapped my head towards my personal guard Lace, his face paled at the sight of my now late mother, his queen.
Knowing his duty, he grabbed my hand with needed force pulling me to my feet.
"We must hurry, there was a fire started in the east and south wing. We have little time before it spreads leaving us no way to escape your highness."
I stared at him in a childlike daze before my eyes fell upon my mother once more. This cannot be real, this is just a bad dream, it has to be.
Without waiting for my compliance, Lace drags me behind him as we exit from the doors. I my mind could not keep up with his words as I mulled over my mother's and surely my fathers death.
I felt empty. Lost almost.
"I'm going to kill them, every last one of those dragon bastards."
Lace came to a holt as the words fell from my mouth like poison.
"Your highness I-"
"Princess Samara, that is you is it not?"
My eyes shot past Lance and on to the stranger behind him, stepping down from his carriage.
"Halt, present yourself in front of her Highness."
Lance placed his hand on his sword as the man stepped closer.
"I am merely here for a dinner with the Lionhearts, i am prince Adrian Vladimir."
