I stood there in the hot air as ash began to fill the sky. My eyes glued to the man named Adrian. His blood stained eyes stared at me, nothing present.
I watched as his eyes shifted to the burning remains of my palace behind us, shock and fear began to simmer in those eyes.
"What is going on!"
His voice boomed over the crackle of fire, and the raging roars of wind around us. He stared at Lance with a distasteful look. Lance straighten his posture. As he pushed me further behind him, almost blocking my view. Almost.
"Your highness, there was a breach. The queen and king have fallen. Her royal highness Samara is the last of the Lionhearts."
Lance places his right hand on his left side in a fist and he kneels before the prince. My eyes were roaming all over him, was he the man my father spoke of?
"That is a tragic finding indeed. We cannot stay here. We will perish along with the palace if we do not leave at once."
Adrian turns his back to us making his way to his carriage. He motions for us to follow. Lance gives me an approving look as we follow.
Among the silence in the carriage, my mind began to process this evenings events. Unwilling tears began to stain my cheeks as I stared out at the pitch black void of darkness. My home was up in flames, my father is dead, my mother perished too. My life has come to a horrific path of blood. What will become of me? I'm sure they were sent to kill us all. I was not safe, no matter where it is I may go. Soon I'd perish alongside my dear father and mother.
"Your highness, please do not cry."
Lance places his hand on my head, as if I were a child in need of comfort.
"I am fine Lance, I'm terrible confused at to what events had just come to play." I sigh. My eyes once again fall on Adrian.
"I find it odd out of all times for you to present yourself you choose to do it the day our home went ablaze prince."
I couldn't retract the venom that coated my lips as I glared at him. He sat under my gaze unmoving, unbothered. He takes in a deep breath removing his hat, revealing a short hairstyle, that resembled a star and moonless sky.
"I was suppose to dine with you mother and father this evening, since today marks the year before you become my queen. Princess."
His words seemed distant as his gazed locked with mine. I sat in my seat for a moment. Refusing to advert my gaze as Lace began steering the conversation on other topics, once again leaving me to my darkened thoughts.
I was not sure what my future had in store for me, but I knew once I was safe, I could grieve the loss of my father and mother. Pain began gripping at my chest as their smiling faces flashed through my mind as if it were on a record player. My chest began to burn as I felt my body begin to tremble. This time, the tears did not stop. They flowed from my eyes, down my cheeks like a raging river, full of hatred, sadness, heart break. I stared off into the night once more through blurry eyes before scrumming to the darkness, letting my eyes fall close.
"Samara, please wake. We have arrived."
I opened my eyes to find us outside of a beautiful estate. The sun was just peaking above the horizon showing us the grayish color painting the outward stones that lined the walls.
"Where are we?"
"We are at my family's estate inside your kingdom. It would be a rather huge pain to always room at your palace so we had a place built near to outskirts of the city."
I watched as Adrian walked over towards the horses, giving them a gentle smile before once again locking eyes with me. He motions for us to follow him as he begins walking to the front doors.
"Samara, I will have a room ready shortly for you. Please wait in the study."
Adrian swings the tall black oak doors open revealing an almost gothic fell. The floor was a black stone, covered by a dark red velvet carpet. The wall to floor windows were hidden with heavy black curtains with golden embroidery. The tall black and white marble pillars lined the entrance way toward the cherry wood grand stair case.
"Your home is very-"
"Very dark, yes?"
Adrian looks back at me with a mischievous smile before placing his hand on the stairs railing.
"The study is through those doors. Please wait there. Lance if you'd please follow me."
Without waiting for a response Adrian continued up the stairs. Lance gave me a pitiful smile before following behind him. I go though the doors that Adrian pointed. If I were correct it was a study. I gently push the door open and to my shock a woman sat at the desk in front of the door.
"Oh pardon me! I wasn't aware there was anyone in this room. The prince had directed me here."
The woman had almost fallen out of her chair upon seeing me. She placed her hand over her chest and took in a deep breath. Her blonde hair was pulled neatly into a bun, her brown eyes shone under the candle light in the room.
"It is fine, I wasn't aware the prince would be bringing guest. I am his house maid, Roma. It is nice to meet you miss-"
"Princess Samara."
I smile, giving her a small bow. Her face falls as realization washes over her. She quickly rises to her feet and bows in front of me, begging for me to forgive her rudeness over and over again.
"Roma it is quite alright, do not fret I-"
"Ah, Roma I found you. From now on you will be tending to Samara. A great tragedy has accrued. So she will be living here from this day onward."
Adrian explains pushing the door further open. I give Roma a nod of the head before following Adrian out of the room.
"I know it is early morning, but you need rest Samara, I will show you to your room."
I don't give him an answer as we make our way up the stairs. I had kept myself together as much as I could, but I knew the moment I was alone, I would break down completely.
"Here is your room, please ring this bell if you need me."
Adrian smiles pointing to the small bell above the bed. I give him a small smile. I give him a small bow as he closes the door behind him, exiting the room.
Hearing the door close with a click, my heart sank to the bottom of my stomach. Grief washed over me like a massive wave in the sea, drowning me in my own salty tears as painful memories flashed in my head like a lightning storm.
I fall to my knees, quietly sobbing in my hands. They were really gone.
