In the year 2106, the meteor hit the city of Andromeda, Australia. Fires sprung into every direction for miles. The beautiful city was in a burst of flames. Most firemen couldn't stop the fires. Those fires were caused by a small part of the planet Mars, after the neighboring planet was hit with an asteroid it broke off a small bit of the planet. A fragment of Mars sits in center city to this day. The city dome was built the following week once all the fires were put out. The glass dome surrounds the city to this day, no one is allowed in or out of the dome to keep the citizens safe. Once this was discovered the city's glass dome was built. Scientist believed that by buli-
"Miss Silver, is your book more interesting than my lesson" Mr. Wood's voice rang out in my head, "Miss Silver...?"
"What... no sir," I gulped. " I love learning about," I glanced at the board, "Algebraic proofs"
"That's what I thought, Now...," Mr. Woods's voice drifted off into the distance and the chance of me passing the proofs test with it.
Later that day Catie strutted up to me in the hall right before 10th, blabbering like always about one thing or the other. Catie, Emily, And I have been friends for as long as I lived in Andromeda, ten years before they even built the dome. Which also means my whole life.
" .... So are you coming," Caite's voice rang out in my ear. I have to stop zoning out so much.
" Uhhhh Yeah," my voice sounded like paper.
"Wait like really, because your dad never lets out past city closing." City closing when all street lights are turned off and you are only allowed to walk on certain streets.
"Ok in all actuality I didn't hear anything before, 'are you coming'."
"Uhhh are you coming to the pre-wedding party for my sister, because if your not I think I might just melt into the floorboards."
"Aren't you the maid of honor?"
"No! Rachel is, its not fair. Anyways it's at my place, 21:15 till morning. If you can stay that late"
"I'll see what I can do."
The bell rang, time for another 50-minute lecture.
Around 16:00 I walked to the edge of the glass as I do every Friday, and waited for mom my to get there. It's the only time of the week I get to see my Mom. We are allowed this close to the edge of the dome one day a week and only for an hour, so Dad never gets to see her because of work. I wanted her to tell me a million stories about what it was like outside the dome. My friends say I'm lucky that my mom was locked out of the dome since she can never yell at me. She only ever wonders what's it like inside the dome.
"Hi, baby." My mom's voice sounded harsh like something happened.
"Is everything okay."
"Oh, yeah just a hard day at work," she sighed. "So how was your day?"
"It was okay I guess, Mr. Wood definitely hates me, and I have to go to Cat's sisters 'pre-wedding' party which I think is just a bachelorette party but I'm not really sure. You?"
"It was alright.." My mom went on talking and talking and I just listened like I always do but I love it. If we were allowed here more often I would come, It was beautiful sitting in the grassy area under the trees by the dome, but we're not allowed.
"Mom, why did they build the dome?"
"What?"
"Why did they build the dome? They saw the effect the Berlin Wall had on Germany, and this is almost the same thing. Families split overnight homes destroyed, there's no reason for it, so why is there a glass wall between us? This dumb thing Split Adromad off from the rest of the world. You're my mother and I have to talk to you through a piece of glass, it's not like I'm in prison. Even if Australia was once just a huge jail for England."
"Well Mia, I really don't know. Its a piece of glass keeping me from ever seeing your father, and only allowing me to see my daughter for an hour every Friday." Just then the city bells rang "Visiting hours" to the prison with homes was over.
"I love you mom, see you next week."
"Love you, sweetheart." For my mom the last sentence was the same every week 'I love you.' Some people say if you say a word enough it will lose its meaning but these three words will always stay with me. The night they built the dome my mom was on her way home from a three-week business trip from Taiwan. She wasn't there when the worst day of my life happened. I love you, the words seem so much more important, because I love my Mom too, more than anyone else in the world.
When I got home, the house was empty. There was a note on the table that my dad had gone to the store. I grabbed my camera and wrote my own note saying I was headed to Catie's for the remainder of the day. I walked into Catie's house as I do almost every day. It happened so often her mom gave me a key for the front door. Catie was standing in the kitchen putting something in the oven, it looked like a tart or pie of some sort.
"Hey, you made it." Her voice came at me with a little to much pep. I was only here early to take photos of Keira's wedding dress for the ceremony.
"Yes, I'm here like I said I would be but just remember I have my monthly blood test tomorrow morning."
"I hate those things they don't show anything. That big rock in the center city didn't do anything to us."
The center of the city still contains the rock from the planet of Mars.
"Why didn't the government get rid of the part of Mars?"
"Why are you so obsessed with why they built the dome, it happened 7 years ago deal with it."
"Your right, I'm sorry."
"Speaking of unnecessary things, wheres the dress?"
"Oh right back here." And just like that Catie and I feel into the thing we were both best at. I took a photo from every angle. The dress was beautiful and flowy. Now I wasn't quite sure why Mrs. Blue wanted me to take pictures of her daughter's wedding dress but I loved it anyway. The white dress looks perfect no matter how you took the picture or what filter you put on the camera. About one million pictures latter Mrs. Blue and Keria walked in from who knows where.
"Hey, mom." I could her Catie from the kitchen. As much as Catie can be a pain, her cooking is always amazing. I could smell what was in the oven and I could almost taste the sweetness. Whatever was on the stove for dinner smelled amazing too.
"Cat is dinner ready I'm starving." Keria sounded as if she actually was about to starve without food.
Catie's reply was probably longer then it should have been for a yes or no answer. " Of course it is but no food will be served until the bridesmaids arrive."
"But it is my party."
"NO!" She said it like my mom when she still lived with us before they built the modern Berlin Wall.
Keria looks almost afraid of Cat before she answered, "Okay." I saw her gulp. Just then the doorbell rang.
I spoke before anyone else could, "I got it." I ran from the living room to the door and opened it. Rachel turned around and wiped my in the face with her hair. I felt it in my mouth.
"Gross, Rach."
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry."
"Come on in, dinner is ready."
"Please tell me Cat cooked and not the bride to be."
"Yes, Cat cooked. If Keria cook the house would be on fire."
"Ok good." We all ate dinner and talked about who knows what. What we would all wear to the wedding, How Many kids asked Emily out (None), and everything in between. It wasn't much of a party but I loved it anyway. The food was as wonderful as it smelled. I never thought that Cat's sister's marriage could be such fun.
"Oh my god, its almost 2 AM I should get going." I almost choked on the air around me from laughing too hard. I took a sharp breath and headed towards the front door. I walked to my car in the blackness of the night. I got in my car and headed for home which just so happened to be on the opposite side of the city.
Andromeda city was gorgeous at night, at least it once was. The city lights shine like stars up above the glass skyscrapers.
The light turned green in front of me, I stepped on the gas and then the world switch a gear. All sounds went silent I felt the car skid off the road, through the trees, and down to the dome. Then next thing I heard was the shattering of glass, and then nothing I black out completely.
The next thing I knew I was being pushed through the halls of a white building. People screaming all around me and above me, was my Mom? I knew something was wrong but I couldn't be hallucinating my mother, then I blacked out again.
It felt like the word was laying across my shoulders and upper chest when I finally work up. Catie and Emily were sitting at the edge of the bed and in the chair next to them really was my mom.
"What time is it?" my voice came out raspy and cold and most of all... damaged?
"7:00 AM," Emily started. "On Sunday."
"What! How, why... Where are we?"
"We're in the hospital Mi." Catie looked at me like my head just fell off my shoulders and I was still talking.
"What why? What Happened?" I still sounded damaged.
My Mom spoke for the first time. "You were in a car accident Mia, You shattered the sector of the dome closest to where I lived. The police let me in considering my daughter was a blackout in her car bleeding from her head."
I instinctively reached for my head and felt a scab that hurt to the touch.
She continued, " The city decided to start deconstruction of the dome they said they have been thinking about it for a while and since one sector was already shattered from your car they said they start deconstruction. Apparently, all those blood tests showed that the piece of Mars in the center of the city made no difference in your body." Scientists say that having Mars on earth will affect the people surrounding it. Maybe even make them go crazy.
My mom continued, "They said the unions will never let them build something like that ever again no more walls or domes cities. They're getting rid of the dome, Mi."
"For good?"
"For good, and all the dumb laws that come with it."
