THE MORNING CAME LIKE A HANGOVER TO THE FACE, even though for once, no alcohol had been involved.

it had been days since miles and lexies conversation on the roof top, nothing changed between them or anything, but lexie had hoped she had broke some common sense into miles' stubborn brain.

it had been days with no sense of him changing his way of thinking,

but today was not that day.

lexie was in the living room, curled up on the couch with a blanket over her legs, pretending to be invested in the static-filled reality show playing on the television. she wasn't. obviously.

she didn't even notice miles until she heard the sound of his socks dragging against the hardwood.

he stood there for a second, silent, like he wasn't sure if she'd tell him to go to hell the moment he opened his mouth.

"you were right." his voice was low.

lexie blinked, turning her head slowly, not even catching onto what he could possibly even be talking about. "about what?" her external dialogue reflected her internal one,

he rubbed the back of his neck, looking anywhere but at her. "about new york. about... all of it." he finally forced the words out of his mouth.

lexie's brows furrowed. "seriously?" she asked with a hint of breathlessness in her tone of voice,

he nodded once, the corners of his mouth pulling into something that almost looked like defeat. "i have a meeting set up. with my dad's old financial advisors." he admitted yet again,

she sat up straighter. "wait, you actually called them?" her eyes widened in utter disbelief that she had somehow got miles fairchild, one of the most stubborn people she had ever met in her life, to actually change his mind on something.

"yeah." he exhaled deeply, like the weight of the call still lived in his chest. "i figured... if i'm gonna do this, i need to at least know what the hell i'm walking into." he explained some more.

lexie stared at him, speechless for a second.

and then she smiled—just slightly.

"well damn. look at you. acting like an adult." she teased, leaning back against the couch as her eyes looked him up and down.
