Chapter 2: Why so Blue

The path to Blue Diamond's extraction chamber seemed boundless. Onyx felt like she was walking down an endless corridor, following Blue Pearl nonstop. When they finally reached the chamber, Blue Pearl saluted Onyx as she stopped at the bottom of a series of steps leading up to Blue Diamond. Onyx made her way up the steps very carefully, so as not to fall and damage her fragile gem.

When she reached the top, she easily spotted Blue Diamond combing her hair. The comb itself appeared to have a face and was singing to Blue soothingly as she was combing. Finally, Blue Diamond noticed her guest had arrived.

"Ah, you're here..." she placed her comb back down off to the side and ushered Onyx to come into the pool.

Onyx seemed a little hesitant, "W-What is that blue liquid, my Diamond..?"

"Oh, that is just Diamond Essence... It cannot hurt you." the diplomatic gem matriarch assured her.

Onyx slowly slid inside the water, a bit taken aback by how soothing the Diamond Essence really was. Blue noticed this and smiled a bit.

"My Diamond..?" Onyx spoke up when she got comfortable.

"Hmm..?" Blue tilted her head.

"Why did you summon me here..?"

Blue Diamond slipped herself further into the pool, allowing Onyx to rest above the surface while sitting on her knees, "Well... I usually come here to relax and be on my own... But I realized that today, I just wasn't feeling relaxed, so I was hoping you could keep me pleasant company..."

Onyx's eyes went wide, "Why not Yellow Diamond or my Diamond..?"

"Yellow is always busy with her work," Blue frowned, "And White rarely leaves her own room... It's a shame... If Pink were still here..-"

Saying that name triggered Blue Diamond to mourn, tears falling from her eyes. Those same tears appeared in Onyx's eyes through Blue's pathokinesis.

"M-My Diamond..." feeling Blue Diamond's sorrow crushed Onyx. Though she couldn't understand why Blue felt this way, she felt sympathy for her.

"S-Sorry..." Blue Diamond apologized, wiping her tears away, "It's just... Saying that name brings back memories... Both good and bad..."

Onyx looked up at Blue with curious eyes. She couldn't help wondering who this was about. Who was this "Pink" she mentioned..? What was her connection to Blue Diamond?

Her curiosity didn't go unnoticed. In fact, it made Blue Diamond giggle.

"Are you wondering who I might be referring to..?" she asked.

Onyx hung her head in shame, "Y-Yes, my Diamond... I apologize, my curiosity knows no boundaries."

"No, it's alright... I will tell you the story." Blue hushed, "Back before you emerged, there were originally four of us. White, Yellow, myself, and the littlest Diamond, Pink..."

"Pink wasn't like other gems... She was so playful... So curious... So small compared to us other Diamonds."

"So... She was a bit like me..?" Onyx inquired.

Blue's eyes went wide, but then, a gentle smile graced her features. "Yes, I suppose you are a lot like Pink. Your curiosity since you arrived on Homeworld, even before that, is quite like hers... But the one major difference between you two is that you are quite shy, whereas Pink was the opposite..."

Onyx was shy, there was no denying that. She often tried to make confrontations with other gems short, if there was no chance of avoiding them. Back on her colony, she struggled to avoid other gems that well, because there were gems all around when she had emerged from her hole. Finding a spot to hide from other gems took a while, and when she finally did, it was only mere minutes before the Diamonds found her.
