The haunted hangman rushed across and peered over the side of the building.
"He won't be dead," he told us. "Just stunned. He can't die. He's a ghost and will be back!"
His troubled eyes scanned the sky. It was cloudless and clear.
"And he won't be alone," the hangman informed us. "There'll be more of them!"
"He told us he followed us from the bridge," I said with a shudder. "I thunk we'd better go inside. We can't stay out here."
A shout from Niall spun us around.
"There are more of them!" Niall yelled, his eyes fixed in the distant canal. "Here they come!"
Pinpoints of white light were rising from the direction of the water. They reminded me of hundreds of fireflies.
"What are we going to do?" Liam demanded.
"Stand and fight," snarled Zayn, as the dots of light grew bigger.
"How?" Harry wondered out loud, gazing at their approach in sheer terror.
Soon the sky was full of flying white lights. They began to circle the apartment block. I let out a cry of alarm as they drew nearer. I could see them clearly now, and a pang of fear clutched my stomach.
Each light was a glowing human form.
I could see their twisted heads and broken necks-
Their dangling tongues-
Their hatred shining in their cruel faces-
Each one was the ghost of a criminal. Each had met his end on Zayn Malik's scaffold. Now they were back. Only vengeance would satisfy them.
We staggered away in alarm as the glowing ghosts swooped lower and dive-bombed the roof.
