Few days ago, I came across this quote when i was surfing the web, lost in forums which would advice me on the Junior Colleges that I was interested in since I'm gonna take my O's in a bit. The quote goes something like this:
Whenever you start- give it your best. The opportunities are there to be anything you want to be. But wanting to be someone isn't enough; dreaming about it isn't enough; thinking about it isn't enough. You've got to study for it; work for it; fight for it with your heart and soul, because nobody is going to hand it to you.
I could still vividly remember this gal who asked, in a forum: " I did badly this time and i can't focus in class. Should I give up??". Seeing this, my heart started to reach towards this gal. Such a pretty soul, and giving up her academics at such an early age, the age of 15. It is just so regrettable for a bystander to see such happenings. I don't deny that society nowadays are impressing stress onto young teens, in which peer pressure contributed too. But to give up one's education, is too a denial of responsibility towards oneself. Like in Sri Lanka, the Tamils were powerless against the Sinhalese. Many of the young teens are being denied education as the educational system in Sri Lanka prevents them to do so. Tamils had to score higher marks than the Sinhalese students to enter the same courses in the universities, such as the respected Medicine and Dentistry. This was so even when the proportion of Tamils admitted to university was significantly higher than their proportion in the population. This shows an obvious act to undermine and to take away the opportunities the Tamils deserve in education. Education is the key to a bright future. This act of undermining is a sickening and cruel act of denial towards the generations of Tamils that would follow.
Stirring back to the forum incident, one of the web surfers commented on the gal's question, the quote above, as of General Colin Powell. I thought it was really magical, to actually witness such intelligence- the reference to General Powell the web surfer did and the effortlessly-meaningful quote by Powell himself. It really got me thinking about my goals in life, and what I have actually done to make my dreams happen till this date. No, probably not. at a sudden realization, i realized I was just a dreamer, or say, thinker.
We always think that our dreams are too far to reach. But have we actually tries to fulfil the prophecy of what we actually could do. I'd always feel that our future is not decided by anyone but yourself. Things one does actually leads one thing to another. While choosing the wrong path leads one to a wrong life, wrong career, wrong people, choosing the right path might not necessary mean that one goes to the right life, right career and right people. So, before one makes any decisions. One has to consider the consequences and what one thing would lead to another.
Once again, It's the holidays again. This means we have to get back to work, have a foolproof plan that things might work out next year, and everything would be a bliss. A toast, to a brand new year, where everything would go according to plans, and for everyone to experience great success in their endeavors. Cheers! :D
