My shift at the cafe ended and I begun to gather my things together ready to get home, the whole place was empty, excluding myself and Damian who stood at the back.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Damian," I called as I stood by the front entrance to the coffee shop.
"Wait!" He shouted back, he battled with the arm of he coat before jogging up to me. "Do you want a lift home? It's winter, and cold and it'll probably get dark before you get home,"
I bit my lip softly and looked at the long walk ahead of me. The wind was picking up and the street lights were already starting to come on. "Would you mind?" I asked.
"Of course not," His smile grew bigger and he led me to his car.
I'd known Damian for the best part of two years, ever since I started work at the cafe when I was 16. He pretty much coached me for my first month working there, and I was extremely grateful for that.
We climbed in and set off within seconds. Damian turned up the heating then looked at me briefly.
"You live in that fancy estate up by the football grounds right?" he asked. "Rose Grace Estate?"
"Yeah," I smiled, resting my head on the window. Condensation formed on the glass so I wiped it away with the sleeve of my jumper so I could stare out and watch the small town zip by.
I peered over to Damian who was concentrating on the road, his blond hair flopped into his face, shielding his dark, chocolaty eyes. It was no secret that I liked him when I first met him, he was gorgeous. I turned into a giggly little girl when I was with him. I didn't anymore, I'd matured.
I looked back out of the window. We passed naked trees and pavements carpeted with leaves before Damian pulled up at my house.
"See you tomorrow?" He half stated half questioned.
"Of course, bye, thanks so much for the lift," I smiled as I walked towards the steps leading up to my house.
"Any time, Cariad!" he called before speeding off. I watched his small car disappear.
I quickly jogged up the steps and through my font door. I was hit with warmth making me realise that the shitty heater in Damian's car was basically useless.
"Mum, Dad? I'm home!" I yelled, walking into the kitchen.
"Hi, darling," my mum smiled. She stood over the hob, re-heating last nights lasagna.
"Hey," I walked up to the fridge and picked up a carton of juice. "Wheres dad?" I questioned, pouring the juice into a glass.
"In the garage, like always," my mother smiled, hoping it would add some positivity to her tone, she failed.
My father spent a lot of time in the garage, organizing his tools, taking apart vehicles... working is what he called it. Abandoning his wife and family is what I called it. I mean seriously he'd come back from his office and go straight out into the garage, sometimes he'd go into the garden and sit on the patio and only come in when he got too cold.
"Oh," is all I said.
"Kit is taking up football," my mother smiled, changing the tone and mood of the conversation.
Kit was my younger brother, he was 9.
"Is he going football club down the road?" I asked, sitting at the table.
"Yeah," she smiled again, "I think it'd be good for him, you know since he's not very good at making friends, it might help him." her voice dropped towards the end.
