Chapter Eight

Lila had expected the worst. When she first heard that she and Midoriya had to report to All Might every free period, she was already mentally preparing for the most suffocating, annoying experience ever. She thought he'd be hovering over them, watching their every move like a hawk. Maybe even forcing them into grueling training sessions or giving them lectures about responsibility and safety.

But... it wasn't actually that bad. If anything, it was almost too chill. The first time she had walked into the empty classroom they were using as their "designated check-in spot," she had nearly screamed when she saw Skinny Might sitting there instead of the larger-than-life hero she was used to. Midoriya had completely forgotten to warn her about that little detail.

"What the actual fu—" Midoriya slapped a hand over her mouth before she could finish.

"You couldn't tell her first?" All Might had sighed dramatically, placing a hand on his chest like he had been mortally wounded.

Midoriya laughed nervously, removing his hand as Lila stared at the frail-looking man in front of her with deep suspicion.

"...I prefer you like this, actually," she had said after a long pause. "Less overwhelming."

All Might had just laughed, waving them inside.

That had been four days ago. Now? It was just routine.

Every free period, they reported to All Might. Sometimes it was twice a day, sometimes just once, depending on their schedules. Lila didn't mind it, mostly because there wasn't much to report. They had been staying low. Very low.

Midoriya was too anxious about disappointing All Might to even think about lying or sneaking around. And Lila? Well, after receiving a note at her house from an unknown enemy, she had absolutely no interest in pushing her luck. If the traitor could find her home address and Midoriya's, and leave those notes right around the time they arrived, then yeah. Maybe investigating wasn't the best plan. She valued her life, thank you very much.

So, right now?

She was just half-listening to All Might talk about One For All while droning him out in the back of her mind.

"...As I was saying," All Might continued, his voice even, "One For All is unique in the way it—"

Lila zoned out. She wasn't bored exactly, but she had already heard too much about this quirk. At this point, she could probably write a whole book on it.

Midoriya, of course, was hanging onto every word, nodding along like the dedicated fanboy he was.

Lila's fingers tapped against her desk as she glanced at the clock. Five more minutes. It wasn't that she didn't respect All Might—she did—but this wasn't what she needed right now. There was nothing to report, nothing to investigate, nothing she could even do at the moment. She and Midoriya were being watched so closely that they couldn't even take a step out of line.

So instead of thinking about One For All, her thoughts drifted back to her own quirk. It was funny. All Might wasn't mad that Midoriya had told her about One For All. He had actually understood it perfectly. He knew what it was like to have a best friend—someone you could trust with every inch of your soul.

And if anything, it almost seemed even. Because her quirk was just as much of a secret as his. Sure, it wasn't some passed-down power meant to change the world, but her quirk was still dangerous. A powerful mind quirk. And even if she didn't see it that way, All Might clearly did.
