Sure enough, a new semester means new classes and new classes means new classmates. Sarah and I compared our schedules the other day; we have the first two blocks together. What I did not realize is Sam and Karley would also be in our Biology class, first thing this morning. To make matters more interesting, a whole other can of worms enters the room. The road to my life is paved with shit. Out of frustration, I slam my head on my desk.
"Fashionably late, Mr. Bret?" our teacher, Mr. Thompson questioned.
"Sorry, Mr. Thompson, I got lost in a good book." He said devilishly.
We all knew he had an obsession for Liberians, he has had sex with three of them so far. Sarah tried to ignore him. She was still a little sore from their "breakup" even though they still slept together? I do not understand some people, I swear. I know I am never going to hear about the end of "Bret," in this class. I peek over to my left to catch a glimpse of Sam. Karley is leaning over his desk, smacking her gum, and playing with his hair. He glances over at me, and we hold eye contact for a moment.
"Ms. McCann, are you paying attention or are you off in la-la land?" Mr. Thompson challenges me. He has a deep voice that gets deeper when he is upset.
"Paying attention sir." I said, giving a smirk.
"Good, now turn to page," He started.
"394." I interrupt, "I heard."
Before we are allowed to dive in and learn about dissecting animals, we first must learn our safety gear. Why did they put this at the end of the book? It is like they put the damn thing together backwards. Thankfully, our lesson was brief today, however a curveball did hit hard, before the bell rang.
"One last thing, class." Mr. Thompson began, "Everybody will be working in groups for most the year. I find it best to have you sit with your partner and start getting to know one another."
"What? No way! I don't think so! Are you kidding?" along with several other surprised remarks begin filling the room.
"Jessica and Thomas. Karley and Bret. Sarah and Sam. Michelle and Jonas. Adelaide and Ethan." He continued to name pairs, but I stopped paying attention after my name.
I guess this is not the worst arrangement. I am not thrilled Sarah gets to work with Sam, but I know he does not like her. Ethan is okay. He and I have never spoken before. He is one of Bret's friends, but thankful is not as crude as Bret, or at least he does not seem to be.
"Hey, Adelaide. I'm Ethan." He said, reaching his hand out to shake mine.
"Nice to meet you," I respond.
His hands are soft, unlike Sam's. You can tell a lot about a man, by the texture of his hands and the grip of his handshake. Do not get me wrong, soft hands feel pleasant, but I can tell he is not a "hands-on person" which is something I admire in others.
The bell rang excusing us all to go to our next class. We stood and pushed our seats up to our desks. Many people have cleared the room already, Sarah included. I was taking my time, packing my bag. I guess you can say I am in no hurry to get to my next class. I hoped and prayed Karley was not in it. The last thing I want is to hear her compare the dick sizes of Bret and my stepbrother. I am disappointed Sam went back to her and so quickly, it seems.
"Who do you have next?" Ethan asked, sneaking up behind me.
"Umm... Hang on, I'll check." I had to rummage through my bag to find my schedule. "I have Algebra 2."
"With Mrs. Malarkey?" Ethan asks excitedly.
I smiled at him and said shyly, "Yep, that would be the one. Same for you I take it?"
