Lizzie watched Nathan's face go dark, like storm clouds rolling in to cover a previously clear sky. Uh oh. Had she gone about asking him the wrong way? Maybe she should've eased into the subject more smoothly...

"Why do you want to know?" Nathan growled, making her jump a little. She pinned him with a serious look and chose her words carefully.

"I've decided that I'm going to tell her about Connor and I."

Nathan stood up quickly and stared at Lizzie in anger and disbelief. "No! No way in-"

"You don't understand-" Lizzie was now standing defiantly  in front of Nathan, hands planted on round hips, with a frustrated look on her face as he loomed over her.

"Why would you do that, Lizzie! She doesn't-"

"Of course she does! She deserves to-"

"I am not letting you hurt Madi that way-"

"Nathan, shut up! Let me explain my reasoning before you yell at me some more!"  Lizzie shouted, her frustration boiling over. She jabbed Nathan in the chest with her finger. "You're not listening to me, and I do have a good reason for this, even if you won't understand it! So just shut your mouth and listen for a few minutes!"

Nathan's mouth snapped shut and his jaw worked. He emitted a deep, rumbling growl. "Fine. Explain. But it better be a damn good explanation." Stuffing his big hands in the pockets of his jacket, he glared at the space above her head and waited.

Lizzie crossed her arms and dove in. "I've thought about this a lot lately, believe it or not. I realize that you may be close to her, and I understand that you obviously don't want to see her hurt. I'm asking because I want to know what kind of person she is before I decide to tell her," Lizzie took an unconscious step closer to Nathan as she spoke, and her voice went from shouting to normal volume. When he finally met her eyes, she continued. "I need to know what she's like. If she's a strong woman, I plan on telling her. She deserves to know what a lying, cheating, whore of a husband she has, and I don't want her going through the rest of their marriage thinking that everything is just fine and dandy. What if he does it again? He was with me for almost a full year. I wouldn't be surprised if he did it again, and I want her to know so she doesn't get hurt like I did," she ground her teeth together and bit down on her anger, and a random question popped into her head. She narrowed her eyes and glared at him.

Nathan saw the look and it seemed he read her mind, because his face took on a guilty expression. "He's done it before, hasn't he? Before me."

Nathan moved his eyes to his shoes and gave a brisk nod.

"Yes, he has. But I just thought they were flings. That they didn't mean anything," He set his jaw and stared directly into her eyes. "That's why I didn't tell Madi. When I saw you with him at the beach, I thought you were like... one of them. That's why I smiled at you that way. Actually, I, ah, wanted to apologize for that. It was rude of me," Nathan mumbled. He shoved long fingers through his hair, an unconscious habit. "I wanted to stay... after you found out, mostly because I felt like an enormous jerk. It was kind of my way of apologizing."
