I woke up with my arms around Summer. She had a couple nightmares and the only way to calm her down was to wrap your arms around her and I must have fell asleep after the last one.
I didn't want to move so that I didn't wake her up. And because I was so dang comfortable.
I looked at the clock on the wall. It said 8:52.
I hopped up, forgetting that Summer was sleeping. She sat up and looked around. Probably trying to find out what had ended her sleep so suddenly.
She saw me and her face cleared. Then she looked at the clock and she jumped out of bed too. I ran into the closet and changed and then headed for the bathroom.
Summer went inside and then shut the door to the closet while I brushed my teeth. She came out with a new pair of clothes on and then headed over to the dresser. She grabbed off her hairbrush and quickly pulled it through her long, honey blond hair.
I sprinted to the cage and grabbed the collar and leash off. I put the collar around Summer's neck while she finished brushing her hair.
I swung open the door and we raced down the hallway towards the dining room. My mom kills anybody who's late for breakfast.
My guess is that the dead one will be Summer.
Plus it's Sunday. Our 'family' day. And the day of our resistance meeting. I looked at Summer as we hurried down the hall. As long as nothing happened today, then she should be fine for the meeting.
We ran through the door just as the clock struck 9:00.
But Eva wasn't there. When my dad saw me looking around, he said, "Eva said she wasn't feeling well." I saw Summer's head droop a little. And I'm pretty sure that mine did something like that as well. But even though Summer's head droop was real, mine wasn't.
Eva wasn't really sick, we take turns and once a month we fake sickness on the day of the meeting. Even though it was my turn, Eva knew she should take this one because of Summer.
If I was sick, my parents would insist on taking care of Summer. In a not very nice way.
The servants placed toast and bananas and bacon in front of me. I took a bit of a piece of bacon and then dropped the rest. When Summer saw it she looked at her grits and her face lit up in a smile.
I also dropped a piece of toast and banana onto her lap. What can I say? Her smile looked like an angel's when I slipped her food. And I loved it.
I tuned into the conversation at the table. Tommy was telling a story about him and his best friend. His name is Max and he is the third oldest of the Duke of Earsham. His older siblings are twins. And one of them is Anisa who worked her way up the be the dutchess of Beltroy. The other is my best friend. He is also with the resistance and his name is Chase who also happens to be the Duke of Cape Beyan.
Tommy was telling how he and Max played a prank on this old widow who lives in what looks like a haunted house in the street next to Max's.
I know her pretty well since she is with the resistance and we are a close knit group. She is a really sweet and I winced every time I heard about something they did.
As I subtly dropped pieces of food to Summer.
Mercifully a servant came in with a message for my parents and me and Summer slipped away unnoticed. I started towards Eva's room with Summer following uncertaintly. I forgot that she had never been there.
When I stopped arubtly in front of a door, Summer ran into me. I smiled at her and she blushed.
I knocked the secret knock. It was two fast knocks then two slow knocks. I saw Summer's surprised face at the fact that Eva opened the door and looked perfectly healthy.
