As she walked into the math classroom for the last period of the day, Evelyn felt strangely anticipated. It felt like an eternity that she'd had to put up with Jack, and she couldn't wait to get home to some peace and quiet.
"Hello, hello!" the math teacher said excitedly. "I'm Mr. Helis, your pre-algebra teacher! Tell you what, when I point to you, tell us your name and one interesting fact about you. How about you, there with the green shirt?" He pointed to a random girl in the corner of the room, and she stood up. "I'm Emma Randini, and math is my forte."
"Very nice!" Mr. Helis replied excitedly. "And how about you, in the middle of the room?" The student answered, and slowly each student was called on, until there were two left: Jack and Evelyn herself.
"You sir, right there— yes! Your name and a fact?" He pointed to Jack, two seats away from Evelyn.
"I'm Jack Walterson," he said in a smooth, I'm-totally-sucking-up-to-the-teacher voice. "And Evelyn is going to be my girlfriend by next month."
"Ah, lovely!" Mr. Helis said, oblivious to the fact that Evelyn was turning red and almost visibly fuming. "So you must be Evelyn then, yes?"
"Evelyn Boyce," she said, fighting to keep her voice steady. "And in the nicest way possible, I really have no interest in being Jack's trophy girlfriend."
The math teacher finally noticed the tension rising at this point and quickly said, "Alright! Now that we've gotten to know each other a little better, let's open up to page ten in our books! Andy, can you read the first section on exponents?"

Brrrrrrringggg! The bell finally rang, signaling the end of class. Mr. Helis passed out a worksheet to everyone, saying, "So, folks, this is just a simple review worksheet of what we went over today, and I would like this back for our next class! And with that, have a fantastic rest of your day!" The students filed out of the room, muttering good-byes to him and running out to the blacktop to catch the buses. Ava waved to Skyler and Evelyn and got onto a bus. Evelyn, meanwhile, found her mom's car and got in, throwing her backpack into the trunk.
"Hey, Evelyn! How was your day?" Her mom asked fondly, pulling into the road.
"It went well. I made a couple of friends already, though, so that's good," she shrugged in reply. She didn't tell her mom about Jack, worrying what the reaction would be.
"That's great, sweetie! Were your classes challenging? And what about that boy you were fighting with earlier? Was he bothering you much?"
"Geez, Mom, let me breathe!" Evelyn said jokingly. "The classes were okay, not too tough. And that kid didn't bother me much after the first fiasco."
"That's good to hear. Well, I'm glad you're adjusting well, given the circumstances." The conversation stopped after that, and there was an awkward, yet thoughtful silence until they got home. As the car pulled into the driveway at home, Evelyn grabbed her backpack and raced to her room and sped through her homework. As soon as she closed the math book, she checked her phone to find a text message from Tim. "Hey Ev! How's the nerd life?" The message read. Evelyn smirked to herself and wrote a reply quickly.
Evelyn: hey tim. "nerd life" isn't so bad, got some friends somehow \_(._.)_/
Tim: wow guess ur actually popular for once lmao
Evelyn: -.- give it a break for once pls and thx
Tim: nah. but anyway, anyone who needs pranking? got a whole list for the taking ;)
Evelyn: well... there's an idiot who's trying to get me as his trophy girlfriend and he's being real annoying...
Tim: hm, we could do anything if he's too head over heels to get mad at u for something, right?? Anything could work...
Evelyn: this is y ur my partner in crime here lmao XD
Tim: tell u what can I call u? Might b easier to explain than over text idk
Evelyn: sure I'm free rn :)
Evelyn waited a minute, then her phone buzzed wildly. She answered the call, and after a few minutes of catching up, they finally got to the point of the call: how to best Jack.
"So, Sir Pranks-A-Lot, any ideas?" Evelyn asked sarcastically.
"Oh cmon, I still have tons more ideas than you could ever have, Ev," Tim replied in the same tone. "But anyway, here's what I was thinking..."
