I was falling from the sky. For the fourth time in my life, actually, which is quite impressive in my opinion. My last memory was Chaos saying something about how my abilities would be all screwed up, and then nothing. Leo was falling right next to me, which made no sense. The ocean was underneath us, meaning I would be fine, but Leo would be killed on impact. So far, Chaos's plan wasn't coming across as very well thought-out.
I reached out and grabbed Leo's wrist, summoning the water up to envelop us. Nothing happened. That familiar tugging sensation in my gut was gone. Right before we hit the water, we slowed down to a survivable speed. Well, at least Chaos remembered that.
Whack!
That... hurt. A lot. It was looking like my days of falling from volcanoes and jumping off of arches were over. I was no longer impact-proof. Once I came to my senses, I realized that I could still at least sense things in the water. There was a ship nearby. I took a deep breath, and realized too late that might be a bad idea. To my relief, I didn't drown—I could breathe underwater still, too.
"What on earth is going on?" Leo cried.
"I'm pretty sure that's wrong," I replied.
"What's wrong?" he asked, baffled. "I just asked a question."
"The part about 'on earth' is wrong. I don't think we are."
We stared at each other for several long moments before frantically checking ourselves and our surroundings. Everything looked so... weird. I'd only ever seen a couple of TV shows growing up, but this world reminded me of them.
"Leo, you look..."
"I think we're in an animated cartoon," Leo said in awe, looking around us.
"Ugh," I groaned. "I guess it's a good thing that we got dumped into such a familiar situation. I mean, how many times does a guy have to fall from the sky to get the idea?"
"Seriously! I thought I was the only one who made that a habit," Leo responded.
"How many times have you experienced this?" I asked, folding my arms. I kind of doubted that he could top me, but you never know with Leo.
"You first," he said.
"Alright. So, first was when I jumped off of the St. Louis Arch. Next is when I blew up Mt. St. Helen's. After that, there was Tartarus, and then there's this one. There's a couple more, but they're less extreme."
Leo smirked. "You'd better count them if you want to beat me," he said.
"This isn't a competition."
"Yes it is."
"Fair." I considered. "Well, I also jumped off of a huge boat right before it exploded, there was the time with Scylla where I had to stab her before she finished pulling me into her mouth, I collapsed an iceberg in Alaska and took down a bunch of ghosts with me, I made two impossible jumps down in Tartarus—one over the void into the castle of Nix and one over the river of despair with Annabeth in my arms—and... that makes eight. Wait no, nine. I'm not the best at math."
Leo nodded thoughtfully. "You might have me beat with all the extras," he admitted. "Here goes—first I got thrown off the Grand Canyon by a storm spirit, then Khione froze Festus's circuits in Detroit, then Festus crashed again in Midas's lawn, and then Aeolus dropped us through the floor, then I crash-landed a helicopter at the Wolf House. I think the next one is when Coach Hedge made Frank drop me at Sumter, and then I got knocked overboard by that monster and rescued by the merpeople. Next was Khione sending me to Ogygia, and then I got blown up with Gaea by Octavian, and then there was this one." Leo counted on his fingers. "That makes ten! I win," he said, grinning cheekily.
