Late at night, my eyes glazed over the city. Nothing was different. Cars zoomed by, wind rustled through the trees. It was all the same until I saw a girl sitting in her bedroom window. She was beautiful, the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen, although she didn't think that way. I called out to her, but she didn't respond. She was focused on a star, one that shone brighter than all the rest. Something was off, however. She looked miserable, as if she wanted nothing more than their gaze to part.

Night after night, I looked down upon her. She never slept, only stared at the star. It was clear their eyes were locked, meaning she belonged to the star. Although, she was unhappy with it. Whenever her eyes drifted away, the star only burned brighter, drawing her attention back to it. I called to her once again, and this time, she saw me.

The star burned much brighter, but she ignored it. We talked for hours every night, but our eyes never locked. One night, however, she was focused again on the star. The poor girl looked more miserable than ever. Her eyes seemed to cry out for help, so what could I do but respond? I called out her name louder than before. As soon as she looked at me, our eyes locked and the star burned out.
