"HEY TOM," Jasmine said quietly as she slid into the room with quarter of a plate of plain rice.
Tom had been banned from food as a punishment for what he did last week, and this was the last day of his punishment. Jasmine sneaked Tom half of her own food everyday, which was only a tiny amount, and both of them went hungry every day.
Mrs. Cole planned on not taking Tom to the cliff and cave for the trip they were going tomorrow, but Tom charmed her to soften his punishment. That was another one of Tom's talents. Charming people, especially the ladies, even at such a small age.Jessica slid into the room, and almost dropped the playe, as she saw the literal feast in front of Tom. There was roast beef, mashed potatoes, steak, gravy, lasagna, and all sorts of delicacies she had never seen before. She gaped at the sight, and looked questioningly at her twin brother, who seemed equally impressed.
"What happened Tom? Where did you get all this food? And meat? We haven't even ever eaten meat in our life! Where did you get it all?" Jasmine asked.
"I don't know," Tom said, a little flustered and bewildered, "I just, I wished I had lots of food, for me," he blushed a little bit, "and you, because you always bring food for me, out of your own and I want to repay you —"
"Tom, you don't need to repay me, I'm your sister. This is what twins do." Jasmine said, and took Tom's hand.
Tom wasn't a toucher, but Jasmine's touch was the only touch he didn't flinch or hiss at. She was of the same blood as him. And he was really fond of her. He couldn't say he loved her, but she was the closest thing to affection he had ever felt for anyone until now.
"Still," Tom mumbled, "anyone, something like magic happened again. I blinked, and there was all this food un in of me." Tom waved his hand at the food.
Jasmine bit her lip, and chewed on the skin that was flaking off her lip. Food wasn't the only thing that the children of Wool's Orphanage were deprived of. It was a whole list of things. And that list included pure water. Jasmine was convinced that they got water from the sewers, and just drained them, and handed them off to the kids.
But the dirty water doesn't affect kids anymore. They're so used to eating contaminated food, rolling in the dirt, mud rubbing on their face and sometimes getting swallowed, that they were completely immune to things, even equivalent to drain water.
But it disgusted Jasmine. She would remain thristy, but she wouldn't drink that disgusting water more than absolutely necessary.
Tom knew of this, and he was worried his sister won't drink enough water, so he stole some money from Mrs. Cole, and went off to the street, to buy a bottle of distilled mineral water, which Jasmine treasured and kept going for weeks. But they were found out, as they forgot to dispose of the bottle, before Mrs. Cole did her monthly checking up on them. They were scolded and disgraced for stealing, and went on without food for an entire month.
"Do you really think that we can do magic? But, Tom it's not real, it's just a fairy tale." Jasmine said.
"We don't know that for sure." Tom said, taking a bite out of the steak, and his eyes drooped in sign that the food was delicious.
"Are you sure it's safe to eat, Tom?"
"Must be. Come on, Jasmine, try it!" Tom said, offering her a plate of lasagna, which Jasmine sceptically took a bite of.
"Mmm, It is pretty good." Jasmine licked her lips, and took another bite.
"See? Come on, get comfortable, Jasmine. It's not everyday you get such delicious food." Tom grinned.
Jasmine and Tom ate in silence for a few moments, savouring the taste of the food they had never had anything like before. Between them, silent thoughts of the cave and cliff they were going to go to tomorrow were passing.
Jasmine shuddered to think of it. It was freezing tomorrow, and they were going to be in the cave all along. They were tons of terrible possibilities. They could get blocked in by rocks, that suddenly fell across the entrance. They could take a wrong path, and loose their way. They could get stuck in the cave for a hundred years. They could freeze to death.
The terrible outcomes of their little adventure was endless. Yet she still wanted to go. She wanted to be daring. She wanted to be brave for once. She wanted to please Tom. She wanted to make him proud. So she did it.
Bad choice.
