Lillian exhaled exasperatedly as her eyes read the words that represented her mother. She stared at the epitaph on the headstone with admiration and despair.

'In memory of a Lovely person,
wife, mother, and a daughter
ALISON NIGHTINGALE
07.08.1976 to 27.05.2016
Always in our hearts'

It's been a month since Alison Nightingale died, Lillian turned 18, and her life turned upside down...all over again.

The white lilies in her hand were nothing against the bright freshness of her flawless skin. Her beauty was passed on to her by her mother who, unfortunately, died while giving birth to her. When Lillian was about ten months her father married Alison and since then they all had lived together. Though Alison was not Lillian's biological mother regardless, she loved her like she was her blood.

Lillian's eyes never left the skillfully carved letters. Tears threatened to spill as they pooled around her sea-green eyes.

"I miss you so much, mom. I wish you were...here with me. Close by, giving me hope like you always did. Without you, life feels so empty, mom. You were the only one I had......you know how dad could be. Why did you leave me !?" she sobbed shutting her eyes. A tear escaped her eye and landed on a soft petal of a lily sliding down slowly and vanishing into its maze.

"I am...so...so alone mom." She whispered sniffing. She took a long breath to soothe her lungs down.

A stray monarch butterfly fluttered around Lillian and without her noticing perched on the lilies. Sensing something moving, her eyes darted over the flowers which brought a wistful smile upon her face.

"Mom look! it's your favourite butterfly." She looked at the headstone and then at the butterfly and again at the headstone. More tears rolled down.

"Should I take this as a sign? Does this mean you are listening to me?" Feeling hopeful she blinked back her tears and looked at the headstone smiling.

"If you are around just know that..... I love you so so so much."

Accepting Alison's Death was hard for Lillian. The trauma and shock were too unbearable for her. She even went on without eating for a week. All she did was just cry and lay on her bed all day and night but gradually she learned to accept the fact and moved on.

She placed the lilies over the freshly grown grass. Instinctively, the butterfly fluttered and flew away joining its mates. Busy looking at it she stood up wiping her tears.
