-Aaliyah-
Michael and I returned home that evening after grocery shopping and picking up a few things for the children. I laughed as Michael and I entered inside the house and my laughter faded at the sight of Lisa.
"I knew I heard you two. Aaliyah! Let me help you with those bags," she smiled and reached out for my a few of my bags.
I brought the bags closer to me, "I have them! That's okay. Thanks."
She frowned and looked at Michael, "So, baby, what did you all buy?"
"Groceries, Lisa. We also went to a few stores and bought some things for the children. Where's Melanie?" Michael responded.
"Last time I checked, she was upstairs sleeping," Lisa shrugged.
"Last time you checked? Have you given her her medicine?" Michael asked.
"No. I forgot," Lisa said and Michael sighed angrily.
"Jesus! This is so sad," I said and placed the bags down to go upstairs.
"You always forget the things you should remember Lisa. What is wrong with you?" Michael folded his arms as he stared at her.
She shrugged, "I just forgot, okay? I'll do better, baby. I promise."
Upstairs, I pulled Melanie up from her bed and kissed her cheek. She slowly started to wake up and I smiled, "Hi, baby. How you feelin?" I placed my hand gently to her forehead and she was warm.
"Awww, you have a little fever," I said and she whined as she laid against my shoulder. I rubbed her back and retrieved her medicine, placing her down to pour it inside its cup.
Michael leaned against the door frame and smiled as he watched.
"Will you open up for LiLi? Hm?" I asked as I placed the cup to her lips. She shook her head no while pushing my hand away.
"Oh, Melanie. LiLi loves you. I want you to feel better, sweetie. You should take this or LiLi will cry. Do you wanna see LiLi cry?"
Melanie shook her head no and I smiled softly, "Then you should open up and take this medicine. I promise it'll make you feel better, and LiLi will be so happy." She opened her mouth and I placed the cup back to her lips, watching her take the medicine.
"What a big girl you are. That wasn't so bad," I kissed her cheek again and picked her up. As I turned around, I jumped at the sight of Michael.
"You are incredible," he smiled and took Melanie into his arms. He kissed her forehead and she laid against him.
"Thank you," I blushed and stared up at him.
"No. Thank you, LiLi. I appreciate you so much," he replied as his mouth slowly eased a smile.
"You're welcome, Mike. I'm happy to hear that!"
Lisa creeped up behind us and smiled, "I prepared lunch if you all wanna eat."
Michael looked at me, "Join us?"
"Sure," I smiled and we all walked down to the dining room table. I sat in my normal seat and Lisa placed a salad in front of me. I thanked her then rolled my eyes slightly. Poor woman can't even cook a decent meal.
It was around 3 when the Escalade pulled up with Mariah and Jr. I hugged them both then waved to the driver before he pulled off.
"How was school?" I asked.
"Good for me. I passed my math test! See.." Mariah said as she showed me a piece of paper marked with a huge red A.
"That's wonderful, baby girl. I'm so proud of you," I smiled then kissed her forehead.
"Thank you. Mommy has never said that to me," Mariah responded, slightly dropping her head.
I rubbed her back as we all continued walking to the main house.
"What about you, Jr? How was school?"
"It was boring. Nap time was the best part!" He smiled.
"But you're in the first grade, Mike. Y'all don't have nap time," I said confused.
He laughed, "And that's why it was the best part."
We all laughed then entered inside the house. I inhaled the scent then looked around with a big smile on my face. I was actually here with Michael Jackson and his family. That still hadn't sunk in.
Michael came down the stairs and kissed the children. His hands then wrapped around me, "I have to head out to the studio now, Liyah. I'll try to return home in time to help you prepare dinner."
"Be safe! Have a good time!" We kissed each other's cheek then he proceeded out the door. I locked the door behind him and turned around to see Mariah and Jr giving me this googly eyed stare. I laughed, "Homework! How bout it?"
Later that night, Mariah stepped in front of Lisa.
"Mom, look! I aced my test!"
Lisa laughed into the phone as she fanned Mariah off.
Mariah pouted, "Mama! Look! Aren't you proud of me?"
Lisa stopped laughing, "Why are you being so rude, Mariah? You see me on the damn phone!"
I placed my cooking utensils down and walked into the living room.
"You don't have to be so mean, Mrs. Jackson. She just wants to show you her progress in math class," I said as I took Mariah's hand.
"Stacey. Ima have to call you back," Lisa said and dropped her phone, "There you go again trying to tell me how to treat my kids! I had those children! They belong to me!"
I scoffed, "You don't do anything for these children, Lisa! What kind of a mother are you, hm? I just entered their lives and I do more for them than you've ever done!"
Mariah cried softly, "Please don't argue!"
Lisa sprung her hand out against my face and Mariah jumped between us.
"Don't," she cried. I pulled her out of the way and stood close to Lisa, bringing my voice to a whisper, "If I didn't know any better I'd think you were about to hit me."
Lisa pushed me and I fell to the floor. Mariah screamed and I stood to my feet, pulling Mariah up the stairs.
I decided to walk away instead of fighting Lisa. Michael wouldn't like that and Mariah's eyes didn't deserve to see that.
"Get your brother and sister and you all get washed up, Mariah. Don't cry, sweetie. I wouldn't fight, okay?" I said as I rubbed her hair.
She nodded through her tears as she walked away from me. I sighed heavily as I thought of Lisa pushing me. I couldn't believe she had the nerve to do that, and in front of her daughter.
