Before we get started I just want to say I'm sorry if any of you reading think this is a bad story, this is actually the first one I've ever written on here. And please comment on things you think I should add to my story. Thank you guys so much! - Maddy
From Tay's POV
The dark room might be what's affecting my eyes, or it's the fact that I just woke up. Black dots are flying across my line of vision but after a minute or so they go away. I sit up, being careful not to disturb my little sister, Lynn, and see that my older brothers are still asleep. I look across the room and see that my father is gone from his and my mother's bed. I realize he probably already at work, even though it's reaping day he still has to work, on a normal day we would all have to work from eight-thirty till five o'clock p.m. with lunch in-between.
I quickly exit the bed and quietly enter the kitchen. We have about a pound of frozen fish, which I toss into a pan with some chives and other herbs. I put the pan over the fire and as it's cooking I go outside and fill a bucket with water from our well. When I go back inside I see my brother, Blaine, flipping the fish in the pan.
My siblings and I have only needed to sign up for tesserae a few times in our lives, and those were in the winter, my little sister is only six so she's not old enough to sign up, I'm thirteen and my older twin brothers are both fifteen.
By the time breakfast is ready my whole family is up, we eat our breakfast, and then my mother tells me to go bathe. When I finish I see that my mother has laid out a dark blue dress. I'm putting it on and looking in the mirror when my mother walks in with a gold locket in her hands. I'm not much of the person to be wearing dresses or necklaces but I let it slip every year on reaping day.
"Lift your hair up," she says to me, I do so and she clasps the locket around my neck. She braids my hair into a crown around my head but leaving half of it down. "There, you look beautiful," she says to me, "Thanks," I reply. I walk outside and see Lynn, making little houses out of sticks and leaves. She's dressed in a white frock, and her hair is down. I sit down and play with her being careful not to get my dress dirty.
District four is known to be a career district but we're not trained or anything like district one and two we are good at using tridents and making nets and knots, I know how to use a knife and start a fire also.
We start our walk to the square where the reaping is held. The announcer, Dinae Jutt from the Capitol is dressed in a bright yellow wig with corkscrew curls and a magenta suit with white pumps with heels that are at least a foot high.
The peacekeeper grabs my hand and pricks my finger and then pushes it onto a scanner. "Tay Parker?" he asks me. "Yes sir," I say to him. I am ushered into the area for thirteen-year-olds. After about thirty minutes Dinae says into the microphone in her squeaky Capitol accent, "Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds ever be in your favor!". The mayor of district four does the history of Panem speech and then we watch the video of the war. Finally, after what seems like years, Dinae says "Ladies first," into the microphone.
She reaches into the bottom of the bowl and pulls out a slip of paper. Before I can hear the name. I have a dream from last year, my best friend was reaped, and she died during the bloodbath, and I was there for every moment of it. District one ended up winning, I can't have that again if it was my brothers...
When the flashback/dream is over, I see everyone looking at me. Then it finally hits me I've been reaped. I make my way up to the stage where Dinae says" Our female tribute from district four!". I'm trying not to cry because I know this is being filmed. She calls the name of the male tribute, "Shaun Trinst," my brain is a whirlwind I can barely process this moment. Shaun is in my grade he has a stocky build and dark brown eyes. All I can do is hope that I will not have to kill him.
The peacekeepers escort me into the Justice Building I'm seated on a chair of velvet, the first person to come in is my little sister followed by my parents. My little sister has tears trickling down her cheeks. "Where are you going, Tay? I don't want you to leave," she whispers into my ear as she crawls into my lap. My brothers enter the room, and my other brother Chace, holds my shoulders and looks me in the eyes and says to me, "Please try to win, you don't deserve this,". My mother is wordless and my father wishes me good luck. They all tell me they love me. "Times up," says a peacekeeper.
I know I'll try my best to stay alive but for now, I'm going into the games.
