It's been almost an entire century since Onyx had emerged back on her colony. Life for her was pretty much average and normal. Every day was very similar, except on her special day. Every year, when it was the day that she emerged, the Diamonds, mostly Blue and Yellow, occasionally White, would leave her gifts that would make her happy. Well, so they tried anyway. Yellow didn't really seem to care all that much about what she gave Onyx, as long as it would make Blue stop harassing her about it.
In these past few decades, Onyx had gotten very attached to the Diamonds. She saw them in a completely different light than she did before. She looked up to them, and not in the way most other gems did. She wanted to spend every day with them. She wanted to learn and grow from them to be a better gem. Especially White Diamond, her Diamond...
It seemed odd that she even felt this way, as no other gem seemed to view another gem in this light, but she couldn't deny it. White wasn't just her Diamond to her anymore. She was her Mother.
There were quite a few times where Onyx almost slipped up on her words and tried to call her that, but she knew it would have White confused, perhaps even appalled by her words. She had to keep calling her "my Diamond" until she mustered up the courage to make her understand.
"I wonder if she'll like what I have in store for her." Onyx said to herself, staring at her screens. She had been working on a poem for the Diamonds to help them understand how she viewed them nowadays, but she struggled to find the right words. She wanted to make this poem perfect. She wanted no errors in what she wrote. This was the most important poem she had ever written.
"Agh! I simply can't make up my mind about this!" she yelled in frustration. She was stumped on the last line of the final stanza.
"Perhaps I should take a break," Onyx suggested, "I have been working on this the past ten hours. I shouldn't create this much tension over such matters."
The Pebbles brought out a platform for Onyx to sit down on. She sighed and stared up at the ceiling quietly, losing her sense of reality.
What would my Diamond even say to me..? Would she understand..?
Onyx shook her head.
Feelings are flaws. That is how she always felt about them. I cannot change her mind. I am a mere Onyx.
But she has been very lenient with me, even with the knowledge that I possess no knowledge of my capabilities.
What am I to do..?
"Excuse me..." a shy voice interrupted Onyx's thoughts.
Onyx turned her attention to her doorway, noticing a slightly familiar gem. It was the same gem she had seen who brought in the Rutile Twins when she attended that one court session with Blue Diamond so long ago, but she had never gotten their name; and back then, there were two of them. This time she only saw one.
"Can I help you..?" Onyx asked.
"Y-Yes... You see, I don't know my way around this palace... C-Could you help me f-find the exit..?" the yellow gem stuttered.
Onyx's eyes went wide, "Well, I could... I do know where the exit is, but the Diamonds would be very angry if I even went near it."
"O-Oh the Diamonds will be too busy to even notice! I assure you..." they responded.
Onyx still seemed unconvinced. She didn't know this gem, but she could tell they were a guard or soldier of some kind by their strong build. Not to mention, White and the others would be furious if she went anywhere without their Pearls to escort her. And... Something about this gem, it just seemed a little suspicious. A guard that didn't know their way around the Diamond Palace..?
