As the calming sound of the rain hit the roof of the old shaky house. We didn't have much money.I was in the midst of packing boxes. Something that had turned into such a reality for me. We were moving. To make matters worse, just before high school. I've held a grudge on my parents since the moment they told me that my step dad was offered a stupid job 10 hours away. Mom said that the new job would bring in more money but, Life was going so good for me. then, out of the blue, this bullshit came out of no where. Being the "new kid" was something I've always dreaded after seeing it in movies and tv shows. It just wasn't fair how I didn't have a say in something that would change my life for probably the worst. I lived in walnut California my entire life, and I wasn't prepared to leave my friends and my life for Los Angeles. The city was not my thing. Snobby people, healthy freaks and God knows what else in between. My mom said that it would be good for us. For change. She thinks that a new lifestyle would give me an opportunity to meet new people and have a better life. I think my mother is ridiculous. I have a great little life. I have 2 close friends whom I've known for practically forever. Raj and Kelsey. Sure, they were a bit weird at times and I didn't quite understand them, but they were my friends. I started to sort through the royal blue night stand, while I heard someone slowly creep up the stairs. Obviously so I wouldn't hear. "Yep, I think she's here." I heard the voice say right outside the thin oak door separating my from the rest of the house.
"For you." She said handing me the phone. I asked confident but quiet assuming it was just Kelsey talking about new shoes she got or something. "Who is it?" My mother responded quietly with a bit of hurt in her voice, "your father." The phone Kay on my bed with my dad on the other end. My mom shot me one last emotionless look and left. My dad left us almost 2 years ago after leaving my mom for a skinny little blonde girl who works at lulu lemon named trish. Who he was cheating on my mother with for over 3 years. Both my mother and haven't heard from him since before he left. I was very hesitant to answer, but I figured I should. "Hello.." I said with my voice trailing off. "Hi, sweetie! It's your father! How are you doing? Mom said Stan got a new job and all 5 of you are moving to the big LA! It's going to be a great adventure!" My dad spoke a lot without stopping I tried to interrupt, "I w-" I said "So I was calling because me... Well trish and I needed to ask you something." He had a very exciting tone in is voice. So got knows what it was. A baby? Maybe? "Yes?" I said. I heard someone join the call, obviously it was trish.
"We're getting married!" They both said in such a excited voice. Both at the same time. My heart sunk. It hurt enough him leaving and him not wishing me a happy birthday or merry Christmas. But only contacting me and mom for the first time in years just so he could tell me he's getting married?! Ridiculous. It took me a moment to build up enough courage to say something back. It was so quiet on the other end, I could hear the, breathing. I finally responded in my best fake happy tone. "Yay, I, so happy for you too!" Trish answered "we'd like you to be our bridesmaid! I'll send you s package in the mail once you guys get settled in in your new home. I'm so excited! The wedding is going to be in Mexico!" I didn't say anything except for something hang up. Maybe trish was finally hanging up. She even sounded so phoney. What did my dad see I her? "The baby's waking up! Talk soon pumpkin, love you!" And the phone went dead. I blinked a couple times, "baby?" I whispered to myself. I couldn't believe my ears. Well, maybe it was trish's baby from one of her past relationships or something. No that makes no sense, it was a young kid and they've had a thing for like 3 years. Let's just hope he meant to say dog...
I left phone on my bed and decided to head downstairs. The floor creaked as I shuffled towards the door. From the top of the stairs, it smelt like tacos. A usual in our household because of stan's picky brat Veronica. All the damn kid will eat is tacos. I looked down at my newly painted purple toe nails and hopped down the stairs. Veronica was playing barbies and watching some stupid cartoon. I headed towards the kitchen just as my mom leaned in to give stan a kiss. My mom didn't seem as happy as she used to be. Sure she had stan. But in two years I don't think she has gotten over dad. They were high school sweethearts after all. Stan meant well. He and my mom have been dating for a year and I personally think it's a bit too soon to move us all out to LA. But that's just me. "What did your dad have to say?" My mom asked without looking up from stirring the meat on the stove. "Oh... Um." I started "Him and Trish are getting married..." My voice trailed off near the end. She stopped what she was doing and just stood there and looked up at the ceiling. I knew she was hurt. Despite the strong woman she was, I knew she couldn't keep something like that from getting to her. "That's nice for him. Anything else?" She asked. "No." I said and grabbed a green apple off of the table. Stan was on the computer writing emails. There never was much going on in this house on the weekends. Stan was always on the computer.
I figured I would go and see Raj. I headed to the mud room and slipped on my burgundy toms. Just as I opened the door my mom quickly turned around and snapped "where are you going?!" She was trying to hide her feelings. "Uh... Going to In n out with Raj." I said. Well I guess no more tacos after just thinking of that off the top of my head. "Ok. Be home by 9:00." She said calmly. My mom liked raj. I always thought it was because he was smart. I grabbed my key chain infested keys and slammed the screen door behind me. My brown hair blew behind me as I headed towards the car. I grabbed my phone and called raj. "In n out for supper? Meet you there in 5." I said raj didn't hesitate "ok, be there in a few."
I backed out the long narrow driveway and rode down the newly paved smooth road. The drive was very calm, without any music. The sun was setting and I watched as the blue started to turn pink. It was interesting. Five minutes past and I pulled into the parking lot of the burger joint. Raj was already there. I called raj to this very important meal to tell him first. Before Kelsey. Kelsey meant well she just wouldn't get it how raj would. He was more caring than Kels. I felt like he was easier to talk to. I walked up and opened the glass door, and a bell rung. The workers behind the cash looked at me and smiled. Raj was sitting at a booth at the other end of the restaurant. He seen me and waved flashing the biggest grin ever. Raj was such a nice guy.
I walked over to him. He seemed really happy. The food was already at the table making me wonder just how early he got there. I sat down across from him and the old booth shook a bit. "Hey!" Raj said happily I said back normally "hey." "So." He said "what was this 'meeting' called for?" He asked confused "besides for food!" He added on and laughed. "Well..." I said "my dad called today. The news he told me was crazy." I said Rajs eyes got bigger. He was really starting to enjoy this conversation and what might come of it. "He's getting married..." I said he could tell I was upset. "Well, maybe it's for the best. The future after all will always be brighter..."
