Chapter I

Elias walked out to the sidewalk, eager to get home. A downpour of rain had started and all he had to protect himself was his hood, which was already soaked. He ducked his head so that the water wouldn't get on his glasses.

He heard the sound of running footsteps coming from behind him. He turned around, getting ready is someone was attempting to rob him.

Then he saw the small figure, the bright yellow windbreaker flapping in the wind, her black hair flying behind her. He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. It was his little sister. Ever since last week he had been on high alert for those type of things. Ever since... God. He didn't want to think about it. He was fine.

"So?" his sister said, breaking him out of his daze. She gave him a little smile for reassurance, but in her eyes was worry. "Are we going to continue?"

"Yeah." he replied. They walked past the houses that seemed to go on forever. Exactly the same. No ornamental decorations to determine which was which. No pets that barked or ran up to you, looking up with their pleading eyes, demanding a treat. None.

Elias walked in silence along with his sister, the only sound the heavy rain slamming against the pavement and the occasional whir of an engine as it parked in one of the driveways of the identical houses.

"Who is going to be your partner for the sci-" her question was cut off by the sound of an explosion that seemed to scream in the quiet gloom. He nearly gasped out loud. He knew that sound. He had heard that sound on that awful day.

Gunshot.

He looked at himself, then his sister. She was sprawled on the sidewalk, her delicate face plastered in a silent scream, never to be heard. Her chest was covered in blood. Blood slowly spreading from her chest, turning into a crimson flower. The rain washed the blood onto the sidewalk, draining into the sewage gutter. His heart collapsed.

Dead.

He crouched down over her body. He wanted to cry over his sister's deceased body, scream for help even though he knew no one would here him or care. It was too late. But all he did was stare. His mind couldn't process what had happened. Just a second ago she was alive. She was gone now. Then, something extraordinary happened. She changed.

She slowly morphed into a creature of nightmares. Her arms and legs turned into skinny limbs, her skin turning the color of charcoal. She started growing taller until she was about the size of a car. Her, no, it's hair fell out around the body like a lion's mane. And the face, my God. Teeth that could cut through bone, a long, purple tongue that flowed out of its mouth, and there were black pits where eyes should've been.

He looked up, searching the heavy rain for the killer. He saw the silhouette of a man, a gun pointed at his head. He couldn't see his face. Elias stood up straight, trying to act fearless, but inside he wanted to crouch into a ball and go into a nervous breakdown.

"What do you want?" he yelled, a slight quiver in his voice. He wanted this man to leave him. But instead he ignored Elias, still standing with a gun in hand.

"Come with us." the man said in a metallic voice.

"With who?" Elias replied. Was there backup? he thought. The man shifted and two people, a girl and a boy, showed up from behind him, armed with swords and knives and other weapons he couldn't name. The girl, who looked no older than him, had curly dark hair and dark skin. She had emerald eyes that seemed to shine through the rain. The boy, only 10 or 12, was scrawny and had similar features but without the green eyes. He seemed to be drowning in weapons. The girl spoke.

"There's more of us. Attack and we'll shoot your insides out. The scrawny boy nodded his head in agreement.
