I wake up, suddenly and without reason. Practically gasping for air, I sit up and study my surroundings. Where am I? The walls are telling me I'm in circular dungeon of sorts, old, mossy brick surrounding me.
As I look, a more pressing question comes into mind with alarming urgency. Who am I? I stop and ponder, looking at myself. I am a female, and judging from the length of my dark brown hair, I've been here for a while. I'm in a plain tunic, and shorts.
I'm at a loss for questions until I look up. I'm in a pit! My elation at discovering this makes me feel like climbing the large wall. There is a large grate, but from what I can tell, the holes should be large enough to slip through, albeit barely.
I back up slowly, preparing myself. Then I run, going the full distance in only a few steps. I jump up, grabbing the slender grooves in the wall. I climb up, gritting my teeth. I start getting to the grate, my excitement flourishing over the edge.
I grip the bars tight as my body weight dangles above the hole I was in. I'm pulling myself up when I hear a sharp laugh, a maniacal sound that indicates insanity yet is devoid of humor. I look up, only to see a hooded figure in the moonlight. They speak, in a giggly, almost frenzied voice. "Can't have you getting out, now can we?" He presses his shoe down on my fingers and I wince. They press harder and harder until I relent, slipping back down into my imprisonment. I fall for just a couple seconds, still enough to cause mind splitting pain.
I roll around like a pig, groaning as try to lift myself up and fail. My vision starts blurring, and I plead for pain to end. Finally I'm passing out, but not before I hear the scraping sound of a grate being lifted.
