All Gabriel Agreste wanted was his wife back. He didn't mean for the serum he concocted from his kwami's magic to turn his wife into a flesh eating corpse. He didn't mean to get bitten. And he certainly didn't mean to spread the virus like a wildfire, heading toward the heart of France.

But, it doesn't matter what he meant, it's what happened.

Paris went on lockdown, while other cities became overrun with the Infected.

Walls were built.

Soldiers were trained.

Graveyards were burned.

Infection was spread.

Adrien Agreste, Gabriel's only son, was taken away and trained to properly kill the Infected. He came back to Paris, and took the position of master of the Agreste Manor.

Self defense classes turned to zombie-killing-training-sessions, and soon, even Rose Lavillant was a ruthless warrior.

Marinette Dupain-Cheng's family, however, could not afford the classes to train their daughter. Meaning, she supposedly knew nothing of self defense or fighting. Which was a lie. For, late at night, Marinette would speak the magic phrase and become the masked defender, Ladybug.

Before the Infection began, Ladybug and Chat Noir were Paris' defenders against lesser evils. But they took up the mantle of defenders against the Infected without hesitation.

The owner of the cat miraculous was Adrien Agreste himself. Of course, it was easier for him to be a masked crusader, due to his already being well trained in the art of combat.

While Adrien and Marinette were around each other often, both in and out of their masks, the magic of their miraculous' prevented them both from learning their secret identities.

Marinette was infatuated with Adrien, she even fancied herself to love him. Though, when zombies started raising from the ground and infecting the living, Marinette decided to push aside such silly notions as crushes.

Adrien had been in love with Ladybug since the day he met her. There was once a time he would flirt and joke while fighting by her side. But, like his partner, he deemed the time too horrible to joke or flirt with the love of his life. Heaven forbid he made a joke and distracted her, leading to her getting bitten. He would never risk that.

Adrien, having just turned 18 when his father got bitten, was legally considered an adult, so he lived alone in his big mansion, save for Nathalie, his father's old assistant.

Marinette, being only 17, still lived with her parents, in their family bakery.

Sabine Cheng worried for her daughter. She relentlessly looked for a way to teach her daughter to fight. She taught Marinette everything she knew, but she felt it wasn't enough.

Tom Dupain considered Adrien as much a child as his daughter, and insisted he receive free baked goods from their bakery.

Which is why Adrien was there the day it happened. The day Marinette began to hate him.
