Kayla. My first real friend. And she's not just one of those fox jerk bullies from the village. Plus she's a wolf. A creature that I have never even heard of before today.
I wonder why that is? I mean, do the older foxes know that there is another species of humanimals? And have just been keeping it from the younger foxes or did they don't know. Kayla seemed to be unaware that foxes exist. So maybe, nobody knows that there are two humanimal species. It might be better if I didn't tell the rest of the foxes about the wolves. They might think that the wolves are dangerous and then try to attack the wolves. I would probably be banned from seeing her again. What if they are dangerous. I mean Kayla seemed nice, but what if that was a trick and they really are dangerous and she is trying to lead me into a trap?
I'm being crazy. There is no way my first real friend would lead me into a trap. I'm not that stupid. Besides if she wanted to kill me she could have done it there in the forest, instead, she asked to be friends.
I got back to my house just in time for dinner. My brother teased me about how tired and out of breath I was. I ate. Excused myself, got ready for bed. Then layed in bed replaying my time with Kayla over and over again looking for any signs of threat. She's not dangerous, I told myself, we're friends. Finally, my mind slowly drifted asleep.
"Lukas, come on sweety," Sherah said, gently shaking me awake, "get dressed."
"Why?" I groaned sleepily.
"Remember, you're going to the village with me and Chase today," Sherah encountered, "to make some real friends."
"But, already have a real friend," I argued, thinking of Kayla.
Sherah just looked skeptical. "Oh, really," Sherah mused thoughtfully, "what's his name then?"
"It's a her," I corrected, "and her name is Kayla."
"Where did you meet this Kayla"
"In the woods," I said slowly. I don't like the way she said that.
"Un-huh and when do me and Chase get to meet your new friend?" Sherah asked.
"Uhhh, I don't know," I replied. I don't know how I can let my brother and his girlfriend meet Kayla without giving away the fact that she is not a fox. "Maybe some other time..." my voice trailed off. Maybe there was some kind of dye that we put in her fur to turn it orange to make her look more like a fox. Then Kayla can come to meet my brother and they won't act like I'm making her up and will stop saying her name like that. I mean, I will have to run this by her first, of course. If Kayla doesn't mind coming over and meeting some more foxes. Unless this is an overload. Kayla didn't even know that foxes exist till yesterday so then a few days later meet a whole village of foxes... yeah maybe I'll wait, or just see what she says.
I seemed to have spaced out for too long when I was lost in thought. 'Cause Sherah was staring at me trying to read my face. "Umm, Hello," Sherah asked, "Lukas?"
"What?" I said coming back to the real world.
"Your back, anyway get dressed, you're still coming with us to the village," Sherah told me, then left the room.
I groaned. Then I got dressed and went downstairs to the kitchen where Chase and Sherah were ready to go. Then we walked down to the village. We don't live too far away from the village. We live close enough that we can walk, but it still takes us a while to get there.
Anyway, we got there and headed towards the grocery store. There were a few foxes my age gathering between two buildings. One hanging just around the corner, staring at me. Sherah saw them.
