Waking up to Mark was the best feeling that I had ever experienced- the feeling of safety and warmth that came with laying next to him was a feeling that I could never get over. If he ever walked away, I don't know what I'd do. If I'm being completely honest, after moving out of my parents' home, I only really relied on Talia and Mark.
Meeting Talia in my first year was one of the best things that happened to me. In high school, I was mostly just surrounded by a couple of close friends who later on turned out to just be using me. My boyfriend at the time was the football co-captain and we were madly in love. Note the 'were'. That all changed when I found out he was actually sleeping with two of my best friends and my other friends knew the whole time.
Moving to college and trying to open up again was a struggle, but with Talia's help, it seemed like a breeze. Meeting Mark halfway through freshman year was the best. He was so supportive and every day since the day we met, he would bring me flowers. He was the sweetest boyfriend you could ask for. That's why he agreed to walk me into work today.
After my lecture today at 12, I began work at 1. Rushing from my lecture I grab a quick hug and good luck from Talia and run to my car. Hitting the gas pedal I speed out of the parking lot and towards the apartment to pick up Mark. I quickly change into my pencil skirt and white blouse with matching black heels.
"Babe! Are you ready?" I yell out.
I hear quick-paced footsteps in return. Mark jogs into the living room, hair tousled and looking quite disoriented.
"Even though you just woke up Marky I forgive you because you look just too damn adorable." I steal a quick peck and receive a smile in return.
We interlock hands and are on our way. He takes the wheel while I take a seat in the passenger seat with my purse on my knees. He begins to drive while I look out the window and start biting my nails, a stupid habit of mine. My hand gets pulled away from my mouth by Mark and he intertwines our fingers. I just look down at them and smile.
Checking the time it's practically 12:45 and we have almost 4 miles to go. Being on the interstate and not noticing any police, I tell Mark to step on it. 5 minutes later and we're just down the street until Mark forgets to flick on his turn signal.
One collision later, I'm in front of the car arguing with a man driving a BMW who rammed into us.
"Excuse me sir, but you were driving way too fast on a residential street."
"Yeah, sure, says the one whose weak boyfriend forgot to turn on his blinker. By the way, why are you the one out here arguing and not him? He is the one who forgot to turn on his signal."
I roll my eyes at his speech and am about to respond when my alarm goes off for 12:55. I lowkey panic and just look at the man, with dark grey eyes and light brown hair and just smile.
I strain and smile and just say, "I apologize for any inconvenience but we really must be on our way. Here is my insurance for any damage I caused, and my number if you feel like you should apologize for ramming into my car. Have a nice day!" I rush away and just tell Mark to step on it.
Once reaching the place, it's practically 1, so I just run into the office. Mark tries talking to me but I ignore him and tell him to drive away. Running into the gray stone office, I rush into the reception.
"Excuse me? I'm here for my first day. I'm supposed to be the financial controller." I pant out.
The receptionist just frowns at me and says, "So Miss Gregory. It's already 1 o'clock. You should've been here at least 5 minutes before. Where were you? It's your first day and you're already running late?"
I blush and try explaining but he just bursts out laughing and beckons me to follow him.
As I follow him, he begins to talk, "Miss Gregory, it is totally ok. You were on time and I'm actually surprised you showed up at all. Most of our new employees- who are still in college just don't come because of a class or there's too much stress on them."
I open my mouth but his smile stops me. I smile back at him.
"Here's your office Miss Gregory. If you need anything, my name is Samuel, and my extension should be written on your phone."
I kindly smile back and say, "You can call me Natalina- or Nat for short. All my friends do anyway."
"I'm glad to be considered your friend Nat, see you at lunch then. Good luck with the boss." I nod, and just think: Maybe this won't be as bad as I thought. He seems pretty nice and this office is definitely worth any work that comes with it.
