Hotaru only came back home on holidays and birthdays. He kept himself plenty busy to avoid his family. No one ever forgot about that day, but no one brought it up either. Hotaru became distant and almost cold-like. Mizu changed, also. Except he wasn't cold-like or distant. He didn't talk much except to close friends and family, yes, but he was a bright kid. He also cross dressed from time to time because skirts and panties made him feel pretty.
Hotaru noticed this over the years. How his little brother preferred skirts over shorts, or how he'd wear shirts a little too short. He'd never comment on it, though. He never told his little brother how happy he was for him. His brother was happy with himself, but he wasn't. He couldn't bear to look Mizu in the eyes for too long because all he sees is the helpless 10 year old. But now his brother is nineteen. Quiet, but happy nonetheless.
Mizu was happy, he was, but he was also so sad and tired. Voices told him that it was his fault that his brother is the way he is. Maybe he is, maybe he's not. Mizu was ten when his fear of water was developed. He hasn't been near a pool or ocean since, but he was only fifteen when his fear of falling in love was developed.
He knew he was gay. He knew from the moment he tried that skirt on in that one store, and when his eyes would linger on guys more than girls. So, he was open about it. His older brother was bisexual, so their parents were okay with it. There was this one weekend when his brother [Hotaru] brought home a boy, and he looked so happy. He didn't look so sad or mad.
But, a week later, Hotaru came home crying and his knuckles were bruised and bleeding. "He used me," the words echoed through the house, "He never loved me." After that night, Mizu vowed to never fall in love because he didn't want to be hurt like his brother was.
"Stop crying. He's not worth it."
"B-but I loved him."
Mizu's eyes suddenly turned dark and the anger was evident as he said, "You can cry about anything, but him. I don't care if you loved him. I don't care if you did it with him. He's not worth it. So, dry it up, we're going out."
