TOM REPLIED CALMLY, "I don't know what you're talking about."
Dumbledore didn't even bother pressing the matter with Tom. Instead, he clicked his thumb and index finger, and the wardrobe door slammed open once again. On the floor, fell a frozen body. The body of Jasmine Riddle.
Tom's face paled, and he didn't meet Dumbledore's eyes.
"Is this your sister, Tom?" Dumbledore asked Tom, who was still looking at the ground. Tom didn't reply, so Dumbledore repeated his question.
Still no reply.
"I'll ask you one last time, Tom. Is this your sister?" said Dumbledore, his voice taking a steelier tone.
When Tom didn't reply, Dumbledore sighed and mummered, "Legilimens."
. . . Dumbledore sees Tom, Jasmine, Amy Benson, and Dennis Bishop making their way into the cave . . .
. . . Dumbledore sees Jasmine conjuring up the boat, and the look of admiration on Dennis and Amy's faces, while Tom looks at his twin sister in envy . . .
. . . Dumbledore sees how Jasmine conjured up food for them, and how furious Tom was at being out shined by his sister . . .
. . . Dumbledore sees how Tom couldn't control his anger and lashed out on his sister, and unknowingly cast an extremely powerful freezing charm on her . . .
"NO! STOP IT! HOW DARE YOU?" Tom yelled, but was unsuccessful of trying to get Dumbledore out of his mind.
"Tom . . . " Dumbledore said, as he exited Tom's memories, "You froze your sister."
"It wasn't my fault! I didn't know that would happen! Tom shouted, and his lip trembled, "Will she ever be alright again?" he added quietly.
Dumbledore looked over the girl, "It's hard to say. I'll have to have a look at her, and then, maybe I'll be able to or mightn't be able to figure out a solution for this."
"I haven't got any money." Tom called, as Dumbledore began to leave, after casting a disillusionment charm on Jasmine to hide her from view.
"That is easily remedied," said Dumbledore, drawing a leather money-pouch from his pocket, his hands were slightly shaking. "There is a fund at Hogwarts for those who require assistance to buy books and robes. You might have to buy some of your spellbooks and so on — but secondhanded."
"Where do you buy spellbooks?" interrupted Tom, who had taken the heavy money bag without thanking Dumbledore.
"In Diagon Alley," said Dumbledore. "I have your list of books and school equipment with me. I can help you find everything later."
"You're coming with me?" asked Tom, looking up.
"Certainly," Dumbledore said.
"I don't need you," said Tom. "I'm used to doing things for myself, I go round London on my own all the time. How do you get to this Diagon Alley?" he added, catching Dumbledore's eye.
"You will be able to see it, although Muggles around you, non-magical people, that is, will not. Ask for Tom the barman, easy enough to remember, as he shares your name."
Tom gave an irritable twitch, as though trying to displace an irksome fly.
"You dislike the name 'Tom'?"
"There are a lot of Toms," muttered Tom. Then, as though he could not suppress the question, as though it burst from him in spite of himself, he asked, "Was my father a wizard? He was called Tom Riddle too, they've told me."
"I'm afraid I don't know," said Dumbledore.
"My mother can't have been magic, or she wouldn't have died," said Tom, "When I've got all my stuff, when do I come to this Hogwarts?"
"All the details are on the second piece of parchment in your envelope," said Dumbledore. "You will leave from King's Cross Station on the first of September. There is a train ticket in there too. Your sister will remain in my study, until she's cured, I'll let you know when she is."
Tom nodded. Dumbledore got to his feet and held out his hand again. Taking it, Tom said, "I can speak to snakes. I found out when we've been to the country on trips, they find me, they whisper to me. Is that normal for a wizard?"
"It is unusual," said Dumbledore, after a moment's hesitation, "but not unheard of."
Good-bye, Tom. I shall see you at Hogwarts."
